Hello
I have got 16" momo sports on my punto 1.2 8v and it has been lowered 40mm front and rear. I think you will be pushing it lowering and putting 17s on without rolling the arches. The gap between my rear wheel and the arch is next to nothing!
Also the bigger the wheel the more strain you put onto the gear box and clutch.
Does yor car have ABS? if it does lowering more than 40mm can effect the ABS sensor on the rear wheels

you will need arch work for the 17"wheels
kate (mzbond007) has 17s on her mk1 and they dont rub others have said they needed to trim a bit off rear bumper
