General Looking to buy a car finally !

thats not the rust, it will be just behind the sill lip i would guess.

and dont buy cv gaitor repair kit, get a proper one fitted, do it your self if you have the tools, its 2 bolts basicly, only special tool needed would be a ball joint splitter but seeing as its offroad atm, you can try and do it without first, and if all else fails get it done at a garage but you shouldnt have a problem.

:yeahthat:

The 'rust' in the pictures is merely surface rust on the rear beam axle. This is not what was meant by the MOT report. The sill has outer and inner sections with the outer being visible as the ledge that runs from the bottom of the doors(and between the front and rear wheels) to the underside of the car. The inner sill runs from inside the car as well as sections underneath the floor where it joins with the outer sill.

I suspect that the sill that's corroded is at the back end in front of the rear passenger wheel. Stand by the passenger rear wheel and put your hand underneath the sill and feel behind it. This is a common place for the sill to begin rusting so you may find chunks of rust coming away or even a hole. If possible, look behind it too as that will confirm for sure if it's this area that's caused the fail. A mirror may help or simply take a picture holding the camera facing that way underneath the car.

Let the forum know what you find (y)

Found it !! The MOT guy had chalked the area, can't believe i didn't think to look there straight away, school-boy error !

Anyway to my untrained eye it don't look too bad, reckon it'll need welding ?

Exactly where I thought it would be!

*smug*! ;)

Poke it with a screwdriver and see if it turns into a hole. It is a little borderline but it will need welding as no other type of repair is acceptable for rusty areas in the sill. The good news is that it looks very minor so won't require a large amount of work to sort out. It should also be on the cheaper side of the quotes I estimated.

You should be getting your little Uno back on the road in no time (y)

Yeah that rust is actually alot let less worse than i was expecting; just need to wait until tomorrow now before i can contact some local garages.

....as for the CV joint do you guys know of any places to get them on the internet for a decent price ? They've got them on Euro Car Parts for £35....seems a little steep considering it's such a small part.

Thanks again for the help !

You are looking for a CV Gaitor arn't you and not a CV Joint? as those are totally different and would explain the price lol.

The gaitor just covers over the joint and prevents dust and rubbish from getting into the joint.

You want the Gaitor as thats whats failed.

Do you know if it is the outer or inner gaitor? (are they the same on an UNO? i've not looked at mine :p)

Yeah it's just the gaiter i need, all i seem to be able to find is repair kits !

...and i don't know if it's the inner or outer gaiter, i presumed they were the same.

Well if in doubt you can just look under the car and see if they look similar, or you can cut your old one off, clean all the grease off (mucky job lol) and take it to an independant garage, they should have general CV gaitors their, and if not then i'm sure they can order one in for you.you need CV gaitor clip pliers to clamp the new clips on, so you should check out ebay if you don't have a pair :D

Hope this helps

Dan

it will be the outer gaitor, inner gaitors are not a fail.

On a mk1 they would be as you'd get gearbox oil everywhere if the inner gaitors fail ("wet" joints). Plus the tripode joint, not to mention the gearbox, would destroy themselves if driven around that!

On a mk2 you still have inner joints but these are in grease filled cups hence "dry" joints. However, the grease will still come out and lead to rapid failing of the joint if the gaitors are damaged so I don't see how these won't fail an MOT in that case?

The Uno went off to the garage yesterday to have its welding done, going to get a quote to do the rest of the stuff as well. Don't feel i have the time or the expertise to go messing about with it myself just yet.

....i CANNOT drive this car with those hateful wheel trims on, as a temporary solution until christmas what do you think about removing the trims and polishing up the steel. Is this a sensible idea ?

Yea, the steels aren't all that bad lol. give em a lick of silver paint if you only want temp, just remember to mask the tyres off bfore you do it though lol

If you mean by polishing with Autosol or other types of metal polish then no, it's not a sensible idea. You will get them shiny but the first hint of rain and they'll rust instantly!

Do as Dan says and paint them with wheel paint, but make sure you give them a rub down first (500 - 800 wet and dry will do the trick) and then some coats of silver wheel paint. Mask them properly before spraying to give them a more professional look (y)

I'm quite fond of painted steel wheels, actually :) They're honest and functional - not show-off! - and if they are clean and bright, it shows you care (unlike just slapping wheel covers on ;)). And, if you do accidentally kerb a wheel, there's no wheelcover to break.

You want a fairly matt silver, not chrome silver as that can look tacky. I find Duplicolor (American brand) make the best wheel paint. One can should do all four wheels, easy.

Preparation is most of the work - the more preparation, the better the result. Start with alloy wheel cleaner or similar to get all the brake dust off - there's a surprising amount... Expect to wet-sand with 200-400 grit sandpaper to remove rust patches - I see Chas already mentioned that :) Most wheel paint does not require a primer, but you can use primer if you like. Good opportunity to experiment with techniques (y)

I still do this sort of thing even though I also had a slightly more ambitious go at the wheels of my yellow Punto. I put in lots of preparation, then painted in 'shadow chrome' - black basecoat, thin coat of translucent silver, then clearcoat. That paint is very expensive and needs a good spraygun/compressor (to get a thin, even layer and avoid the tacky look!) Usually best to stick to matt silver

Got the car back today !!

They did the welding, unstuck the brake levers, put new shoes on both rear brakes, new wheel cylinder NSR, new CV gaiter, put the spare tyre on (turns out it is near new condition) and drove it to the MOT centre where it passed with no advisories and they drove it back to my house for me as well !

Cost £130, not bad IMO.

Going to buy the tax tomorrow and then we are finally done :slayer:

BTW: A big thankyou to Louiee...received the side rubbing strip this morning !

....next on the to-do list; stereo, polished wheels and a damn good clean

Thanks !

As for the windscreen no one mentioned it !! At the garage and the MOT centre it seemed to just go un-noticed, i'll still have to get it changed before the cold weather sets in (another couple of months yet) and of course i still need to get two tyres which i've been quoted £15 each for part-worn fitted. I'll get those sorted in the next week or so but first i'm going to clean it, i actually have mould growing on the air vents and dash, i'm guessing someone has spilt something and not botherd to clean it up properly....now it's all just covered in white fluffy crud !

Just waiting for my road tax to come through the post.....arggggh fed up of WAITING AGES for EVERYTHING !

....thanks Ucof ! Just need to get it on the road and driving, last time it was driven (before the MOT which was only a 3 minute drive max.) was last August so it really does need a good run in ! The cosmetics will come later.
