at school it took longer than that to pop a baloon, and that was a proper laser in a big heavy box that cost a fortune.

how long is it likely to take?
my mate had one before, said was approx 30s

Do a google search for making your own.
A mini maglite, old CD drive, couple of hours and you can make one that really IS dangerous and will light matches and pop balloons in a couple of seconds.

Cost? About £20 in bits.

dont get over excited, 300mw is less than they use in clubs. hardly dangerous.

300mw (real power) will easily blind you.

Not to burst your bubble but I think I once read that the green laser's from Japan or wherever (guessing yours is because no major brand name) are not as powerful as advertised. The article I read was about a '300mW' laser, but when it came down to it the output was only 50mw. Apparenlty what these companies do is solder a part of the diode so that the first PEAK beam is 300mw, and then there after the board can not handle the power and it reverts back to 50mw.

Just a word of warning!

Ive bought loads of these and sold them too, true most if not ALL eBay laser lie about power but you still will be impressed with it. great fun. for reference 100mw (real power laser) will pop baloons and light matches.

both make a 300mw pointer look like a toy.

when i reach for the lasers i inevitably get shot in the eye. it has happened literally hundred of times over the last decade.

generic term I guess, I used it myself a few posts up. I call a DVD drive a CD drive. But theres plenty of info on making your own from (type very carefully so as not to state the wrong type...) a laser diode thingumybob
