Hey ?
So i’ve recently bought a 2003 1.2 Punto, all was good until tonight when the radiator fan started to knock and the check engine light illuminated, steady but not flashing, any thoughts? I’m guessing that the fan is probably knackered and need replacing?
Thanks in advance ?

I’ve just had a look, engine light is still on but car is running sweet and the fan hasn’t kicked in yet but is cable tied to the radiator ??*♂️

Keep an eye on fluid levels ;)

I made a basic GUIDE on replacing the fan on a mk2 :)

Hi thanks for ur response!
Ive checked all fluid levels and everything is topped up,
is it possible that fan could be causing the engine light to be on?
Also do u have a link for the guide?
Im new to the forum so not really sure on how everything works!
Thanks again

Quick update.. ive just taken it out for an hours ‘italian tuning’ the light has gone off and the dan seems ok? obviously i dont want to ignore it so is it worth changing the fan? im baffled ?

Hi

Does your 1.2 have a temp gauge on the dash?

It could be just getting HOT..

There is a Whole section of GUIDES where people who have done a task on their own car have documented the process..

With the popularity of the punto 188

That is A LOT of good info :)

Hi,

Yeah it has a temp gauge but doesn't really seem to go more than a third up, i have no loss of power at all just a loud knock from the fan!

Ill have a read up on the link now see if anyone has had the same issue, thanks so much for your help ?

At a guess the car is getting hot and then the radiator hoses are pressurised and moving the fan. The fan is fine otherwise.

The gauge at third is most likely to be the thermostat being stuck open which might be causing the overheating because the thermostat is partially stuck open and needs to be more open to cool the engine. The thermostat is on the engine side of the top radiator hose. A few hours to replace it and a few euros to buy.

If the engine has no problems the check engine light goes out after 3 trips that are not short trips. I think they need to be more than 5 minute trips.

The punto is a good car. You will just need to get it up to a maintained standard,,,,,which could appear like one damn thing after another. I think of my own car as being like new. Worth almost nothing but for sure I have some reliable motoring ahead of me for years to come. AND it fits into my small 1960's garage opening
