Are the replacement air filters much cop?

Instead of having a new induction kit, K&N have replacement filters which are basically the same, but uses the OEM plastic air filter box.

Id rather do it this way than completely replacing the airfilter so the breather pipes and hot air inlets all remain.

Just wanted to know if you'd see similar sound/performance improvements as a completely new induction kit?
 
if u wabnt to keep the original box, best thing to do is get the K&N filter but only keep the back half of the box on. well, the part that is attatched to the engine. That way, you will get alot more air flow into the engine and you will get more power. if you take off the air hose and look where its connected to. the air hole on the front of the uno is the size of a screw hole, rubbish!
 
Hi! There is a little difference...but you won´t get the same sound like the whole induktion kit! It´s a bit more like a light whining sound. But it´s much better than the original air filter and the feul consumption will go down a bit. My mum and father uses replacement airfilters in their cars (BMW 330 and Volvo V70 2,4t :)

What about widening the hole at the front of the intake? I cant just leave the front part off as thats where the filter fits in.. (forgot to mention mines the uno 45 999cc)

Basically im gonna uprate to an Ansa exhaust system sometime soon probably, but want to get the induction right too so the sound is mint :D
 
You won't get any noticeable power gain from the filter, but if you drill the front part of the airbox you'll get more noise, although it'll be sucking hot air in from the exhaust manifold and radiator. The cone filters are the best bet, if one exists for the 999cc engine, and my K&N 57i has fittings for the breather pipes. The hot air feed from the exhaust is no use anyway.

Surprisingly the hot air feed is very usefull, especially when cold anyway - it helps prevent carb icing :)

Anyways, i didnt mean drill holes in the front of the actual box, but in the plate where the air pickup is (which i assume is where the air is being majorly restricted).

edit: Oh, they unfortunately dont do the 57i kit for the 999cc uno, they do a bolt on filter, but thats for the 1985 model (mk1) whereas mines a 91 (mk2)
 
You could always make your own induction kit, ill be making one soon.

Get the carb cover from a 899cc Cinq, some bent tubing and a universal cone filter.

Makes a cheap copy of the gsr kit!
