Looking for advice, my odometer just keeps flashing, is this a common problem, does anyone know a fix please.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Flashing mileage is commonly reported and indicates that one or more of the various computerised modules in the car have lost synchronisation. This can happen for a number of reasons; one common one is a break in the wiring loom just where it enters the rear hatch.

Before you do anything else, disconnect the battery, and carefully peel back the rubber grommet to inspect the wiring - this thread shows you what to look for. If there are any breaks or exposed insulation, repair them, then follow the rest of these instructions.

If, and only if, you are certain the wiring is sound, then you need to run diagnostics to check for any module faults (Blue&Me is a prime suspect, if your car has it), and reset the computer systems - this procedure is commonly known as proxi alignment. Franchised dealers can do this (expect to pay around £100 if there are no other faults found; much more if one or more modules needs replacing), or you can buy, beg, borrow or find someone with a licenced copy of multiecuscan (google it); note that the free version isn't sufficient to correct the flashing mileage. You can buy a licenced copy of multiecuscan and all the necessary cables for less than the typical cost of a single franchised dealer diagnostic.

To find someone who may be able to help you with MES, take a look here.

Do not attempt to run diagnostics unless you are sure the loom is intact; running diagostics in such a situation will at best give misleading information; at worst cause serious damage to one or more electronic modules. The airbag ECU in particular won't tolerate any stray electrical impulses.
