BUT. Was the instructor that bad and is the OP's driving really that bad?

Go & get the car checked at a garage. they will drive it and tell you what's going on with it.

If they find nothing is wrong you can go & give the driving instructor a slap for allowing you to get into such a bad habit. Engine revs low enough to make the car judder put huge stress on the internal parts.

Revs wont hurt a Punto and it may be more economical on fuel.

there is a valid point on the poor teachings of the instructor, mine didnt say anything about riding the clutch or using it as a foot rest... needless to say my p reg hand-me-down car from my mum died a sorry death from a blown clutch...although this happened to the guy who purchased it from me as he was driving down the motorway.
anyways, any driver, new or otherwise should have basic understandings of gear changes, even if they dont, it should be common sense. lol. shouldnt make any difference in the age of a car in that respect. i was swapping from a spanking new fiat 500 to a banged up fiesta whist learning and worst i was doing was over reving in the 500 cos the pedals were so light. not saying im a great driver or he is a bad one, but c'mon, u gotta see the funny side of it.

Oh yes its funny and I'd love to see the instructor getting slapped.

I learned to drive a car after 4 years on a bike so I always struggled with the interior mirror (helmets dont have one :)) and I kept knocking it into neutral just before stopping. Bike gears are sequential & get jammed up if you stop in gear and neutral is a pig to find. You never just dip the clutch and stop like you do in a car.

I eventually got it sorted but the instructor, bless her, was always slapping my wrist.

On the other hand, I have no worries revving an engine, can always find its sweet spot for gear shifts and as I match the revs a dodgy clutch can collapse before I notice. Bikes dont have synchro and you really notice if the engine isnt running at its best speed.

instructors getting slapped is always fun. lol

reving an engine is all fine, but gets unwanted attention and makes u look like a noob driver. lol
matching the revs is something i could prob do with working on... not 100% sure what the revs are for shifts but ill almost always know what gear i need to be in to avoid the engine struggling.
all comes with experience. i only started to learn to drive 12 months ago and held my license for 9 months. seem to be holding my own. more of a confident driver than some people i know who been driving for many years. and no, im not one of them who thinks im an invincible rally driver who knows it all. lol

you've gotta love the mk1 punto for it's long 3rd gear:D 15-65mph:slayer:

Having said that, i don't normally go past 50mph in 3rd

lol, that cant sound healthy @ 65 in 3rd. :p

ill normally hit 5th by 50mph. saying that, im normally in 4th on long 30 limit roads if they aint too hilly/bendy. cant say im not economic. lol... although running an ave mpg of 28 at the mo, im not exactly saving much. :bang:

It will pull 5th at 30mph but it wont accelerate cleanly and is probably less economical than going down to 4th or 3rd if you need to make progress.

28mpg suggests its an HGT or the lambda needs checking out.

HGT it aint. its by far a no go motor. id be able to 0-60 in less than a day if it was. lol.
there is a prob with the lambda... just cant work out what... just had a new pre cat sensor fitted and getting the same code up on fiatecuscan. may have to bite the bullet and go to an actual fiat specialist for a fault read. may get somewhere further then. :bang:
