A bit bigger than I'd hoped as the driver is alot deeper than the one I was first going to use... oh well.

Its running of a soundlab 180W (max) amp so that needs to be looked at ASAP.

It makes the car shake quite well.

As with all prototypes it does not fit exactly and there are a couple of changes I'd make to a Mk2 version if I ever made one. Have to see how it sounds once its run in, already sounds alot meatier than the Jensen (£30 from Maplin in a box) was.

Oh yeah, look at

Re: Re: Re: Its in!

that looks a very good fit. you must have saved alot of room, doing it like that.
how long did it take you to make.

Tom for a moment i thought that you had just lost your virginity. :)

Anyway, my compliments for yet another demonstration of your superior craftsmanship after your debut with the stainless air inlet ducting.

By the way, we are still waiting for your ultimate project - the Mini Honda EVO I.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Its in!

The fit could be better, its not sitting on the boot floor at the back. It took me about a day to make but then I have a table saw so cutting MDF is quite easy.

In terms of boot floor area I have not saved any as the old box was quite small and very crap.

Its about 2" futher into the boot than the stealthbox but it has a double thick front, a 1/4" lip around the front as I can't carpet complex shapes the way the makers of the stealth can and the kappa is really quite deep. It started off as a 20ltr enclosure about 3" shallower but became a 30ish ltr box when I decided on the kappa.

Thats on its way. You can see the mini in the background, complete with bucket seat and harness.

Now thats what I call a preview of your project.

got to admit tom looking well nice its looking as snug as a bug in a rug when are you doing mass production so i can get one lol

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Its in!

Looks pretty good m8.

One question Tom, why did you port the box?

I would have thought trained ears like yours would have prefered the punchier stuff.

Hehe!! To get good bass from a sealed box you have to use all sorts of nasty EQing on the amp. A vented box goes that low naturally so you can run the amp flat and get better cone control at lower freq.

ALL PA systems are ported, even some high power mid range boxes are ported to get a few more dB out of them. Certainly if you heard any of my PA boxes you would think they are VERY punchy.

I'm hoping that with a good amp (ie not soundlab) and a slightly non standard crossover freq (about 150Hz) that it will be nice and punchy. Just letting 80Hz and below through does make the response quite woolly.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Its in!

It is quite snug. You can get the stealthbox for £100ish (which I think is a chuffin rip).

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Its in!

i usually set my sub 20-120hz, then set the mids to 120hz-cant remember...lol

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Its in!

You see alot of installs where the crossover is 50-80Hz and 10-12dB bass boost at 40ish Hz to compensate for the sealed box.

Unless you have grossly over ported the box, the port does nothing at higher frequencies and the box is 'sealed' so to speak. If you have a port you can fit your head in then its too big. :)
