Hello everyone. I've been having some annoying technical problems with my Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 T-Jet from 2008.

When I bought the car used around 2 years ago the rear windscreen wiper motor was broken. And so was the wiring harness and lock. Something probably shorted out there and they replaced the lock, the motor and the wiring harness. Then all was fine. A rather expensive repear that wasn't covered by warranty.

Around 1,5 year ago my airbag indicator turned on all the time. It never turned off since then. I tried to take of the power from the battery for a day or so and already cleaned all of the contacts under the seats.

My Fiat dealer first said that there was a defective sensor. But when I asked then to fix it they suddenly said it cannot be fixed and that the problem was caused by a defective ECU....

But a few months ago the rear windscreen wiper started to act weird. It turns on briefly every time I start the car, regardless of if the switch is turned on or not. After a while it stops randomly somewhere on the window. When I do use the switch to control the motor, it always stops immediately and never goes to park.

And as of right now a third issue has been going on for a while where the climate control will pulsate. This means that the air will blow louder and then stop and keep repeating for a while until it begins to work in a steady way. Really annoying

The things I tried:

  • A full reset by shorting the battery terminals didn't solve anything
  • I already checked all the fuses and relays, couldn't find anything
  • I visually inspected the windscreen wiper engine and cables. couldn't see anything off
I recently started to mess around with ODB-II readers and the MultiScan software. The reader that I borrowed from someone is the following one from AliExpress "Add New Cars ELM327 USB With Switch For HS/MS CAN BUS USB ELM 327 V1.5 PIC18F25K80 FULL Chips ELM-327 OBD2 Scanner"

I couldn't connect to the ECU and other components, but I did manage to perform a readout. The weird thing is that even with the colored cables from AliExpress, I can't get the connection to the modules to work in Multiscan.

I got the following error codes:

  • Engine / ECM
    • U0001-88 Error line C-CAN
    • U1700-92 Communic. with board computer (BCM/NBC)
    • P0530-14 Pressure sensor airco
  • Body / BCM (Body Computer Module)
    • U0019-01 B-CAN line
    • U1726-87 Node airbag (NAB)
    • U0001-88 C-CAN
    • B1051-18 - operation rear windscreen wiper
    • B1015-13 - operation rear windscreen wiper
  • ABS / ABS / BSM (Brake system Module)
    • C1221-86 Motorcheck (NCM)
    • U0001-88 Error line C-CAN
    • U1715-87 Node slingering/side.accelaration (NYL)
  • Electric Steering / EPS (Electric Steering Module)
    • U0001-88 Error line C-CAN
    • U1701-87 Node NCM on C-CAN
My question is how can I further diagnose and fix these issues? Are they related?

Any tips on why I can't connect to Multiscan when I use the colored cables with the ODB reader I mentioned? If I need a different ELM327 cable then suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

ELM327 rom Ali are well known to work very randomly: some of them are fine, others aren't ! Only because some manufacturer decided to terminate the CAN bus internaly, while it's not needed since the OBD plugs "in the middle" of the CAN bus(es). It (the ELM327) would connect to the ECU but would fail connecting to other modules with the yellow adapter (that switches to the "low" CAN bus).
Be aware also that wi-fi version will probably NOT work; the best one is still the USB cable version ! The Blue Tooth works but just add another un-necessary layer that might cause issues.

So before going further with diagnosis, You need to fix the MES communication ...

Thanks for your reply Bernie. I appreciate it. I know from some research that indeed some of the fake ELM327 devices can be really bad. The one I borrowed did come as far as this, but not further. Now I understand why.

So now I'm wondering which one can I buy that you or other people had good luck with? I already own the yellow cable and the others that might be needed. That sounds like the obvious next step indeed.

Hi Bernievarian, i need help with a 2016 fiat ducato with the obd2 code U1701-87 engine control module, we replaced the engine control module, the body, and it still does not turn on. The vehicle is locked, it presents me with a padlock on the control panel. I'd appreciate your help.

Do the basics first, is the ECU well powered (ground, fuse, ...) ?

Whats the history of this.. got tricky to recognise either key over a few weeks..?

Wouldnt start one day ??

We need more info.. it sounds like a communication issue

Any work done recently?
