Technical intermittant loss of power steering

It's closely related to the condition of your battery (although not always)

If your battery is old then I'd think about changing it for the best that money can buy (high AH rating with long warranty)

Yes, fit an 063 size battery (the biggest that will fit in a Stilo battery box) and see if that cures it.Otherwise you could be looking at replacing the electric PAS unit.

Also, you by chance do not leave the PAS in city mode do you because that can cause it to overheat and cut out. I never use city mode as it is light enough anyway.

Ha! Where's that coming from, John? I've had mine constantly in CITY mode for 3 years now, should I be worried?:)

Look for something that will cause voltage to drop too low ie battery, bad battery to engine earth (very common), poor alternator charging. a too low voltage or no alternator output will cause power steering to drop out

Read it several times when I had this problem. I think, but am not sure that there may be something in the owners manual about it. I have not had it since I changed the battery on mine. Also, depends what engine you have as PAS has to work harder in an abarth or JTD than in a 1.2 / 1.6 because there is quite a bit more weight in the front.
If the alternator fails (Yes, I had that too) you get more than PAS fail. Dash lights up like a Christmas tree and the beeping and error messages are endless.
I would go for a bad earth connection or change the battery if it is still the original one first as these are the cheap/ easy things to eliminate first.

If you overload the motor with constant excessive turning then it may overheat no matter what setting you have it on but it's an old wive's tale that having it in CITY mode will cause overheating. :)

thanks to everyone who replied to my question :), I will replace the battery and keep my fingers crossed. I am new to the forum and have not had my stilo very long so am learning all the time;)
