i know of a lock set for a fiat punto, including the red key, but am i right in saying that if i were to put this lock set into my car, i would no longer be able to start it as the ecu needs to be changed as well, or can this be reprogrammed by the new red key?? any help appreciated. [8D]

True. You'll need to replace the ECU. The ECU holds the keys "Codes" especially the RED one. A new RED key cannot be re-programmed into the ECU as the old red key is permanently stored in the immobiliser memory.

Looks like you'll need the ECU too!

Nope, been told by a Fiat workshop guy it ain't possible, My ECU on my old 899 cinq shorted internally and the new ECU came with a new red key. the existing blue keys were programmed into the ECU with the new red key. tried the old red once i got the car back and it left the yellow "Code" light on and would't start the car.

Just fiats way of making even more money.[:(!]

if you get a new ECU you don't exactly need the red key. every 1 that i hav spoken to say's the red key f*cks the car up apart from fiat cause there gods. but if u install a new ECU u can unplugg the immobilisor so u don't need the red key at all & the ECU will learn that. so if u lost the red key, really that would be the cheapest bet. but then u would hav no immob. You can get a recon ecu 4 about £160 with a years warrenty. better then payin fiat £300 hey.

If you still have old key for old lock you can tape this to the reciver ring around ignition barrel then hide it behind the dash then when you start the imobiliser will read the old key.

Do you not just take the Chip out your old red Key and put it in the new one? You can with mine as the keys all open can even swap the blue ones! do know some blue keys are moulded but if the keys in the lock set open i would try and cut the chips out the old ones!

Think that would work?
If not do what Dave said!

Lets Nail This one. If you have you old red key for your car, go inside and turn the ingtion on twice. If the code light stays on on the second turn, its the correct red key for that vehicle. If you are fitting a new lock set all you need to do is swap the transponer in the old red key over to the new red key. Simple. Then programme the new blue keys in to system using the new red key. There must a least two blues to programme. If you haven't got orignal red key then yes the fuel ecu must be decoded and a new code ecu fitted.:) before programming..
