Technical Immobilizer Code Box needed for ECU Transplant?

Hi,
I am thinking of buying a replacement 16F ECU that has the Red Key, however I am not clear on what components you need to get the system to work again.

Do you need the ECU, Red Key and Immobilizer code box

or just the ECU and Red Key?

A cunning stunt (which someone -- not sure who, come on. own up!) used on one of my cars is to tie the "old" red key to the braided transponder cable. Seems to work, and Rallycinq has been using the same trick to try and get Alaina's car to start, so it isn't Scotch Mist!

Yes, but that assumes a matching ecu and code box.

Although Alaina's car is now running with her ECU and code box, the code light is back on. I think her chip is an uncoded one, hence the additional non factory immobiliser fitted.
