It's not because they're serially defective. It's that you have a broken wheel arch liner.

To have three broken pumps and not realise you must be a seriously stupid person.
 
weird how a device designed to pump water can suffer water damage!
In my defence, that's what I thought. It was only when I opened them up and saw the rust that I realised what was happening.

I also hadn't realised that the engine inner wing splash guard was missing. I didn't even know there was meant to be one. The previous owner must've had a bump that took that and damaged the wheel arch liner. It was when I was looking at a parts diagram that I saw it was missing.
 
i think maybe the rust was caused by the water in the pump that is supposed to wash the screen!

p.s. i fixed mine today that had not worked for weeks - i took it off, gave it a couple of knocks on the side and now working.
