Idling Problems - Please Help

I'm looking at buying a Fiat 124bc sports coupe. When its idling the revs oscialate up and down in a constant period. The guy whos selling it says that its because it has a performance cam fitted but i'm not so sure.

Any ideas?? Its this normal? Will it affect the car in any other way?

He's talkin b*ll*cks. if it's fuel injected, the idle stepper motor needs cleaning. If it's carb based then i aint a clue whats wrong sorry, but the cam story is tat.

If carbed and revs unevenly at tick-over, it may be too rich mixture.

Causes could include

choked up air filter or
poorly adjusted, or wrongly jetted carb


symptoms are likely to be

failed MOT* on poor emissions (high CO at the least) and
poor fuel economy.


Best way to put the cat amongst the pigeons is to have it independently tested (a garage you know, not his) that way you get 12 months reasonably worry free.

A seriously hot cam can make idling rather uneven, but he may be trying to explain away another fault. Air leaks on the intake can have this effect too.
