Good Morning.
I just purchased a 124 spider at an auction with total unknown history.
The car was sold as a 1983 spider but when I received I noticed that it might be a 1979 or earlier year.
I found two VINs in the engine compartment: one engraved on the chassis, the other one on a plate positioned just below the engraved one.
The engraved vin reads: 124CS10133766
The one in the plate reads: 124BS10050496
Any clue about which one is the correct one?
I assume it’s the first but I have no basis to confirm. Please help,
Thank you.

Hello,

Even stranger that they are just one by another :D

Before I've seen the photo I thought that perhaps the car is welded from two different ones... But it would be hard do achieve it in such situation. However the plate is easier to be moved or swapped...

I'd wait for the end of that story with pleasure :)

I also reckon your car is a CS model, I would tend to rely on the vin stamped into the body rather than a removeable plate (which afaik are available from aftermarket suppliers?).
Here's a link to some guides to the 124 Spider models that might help you to determine the model you have :-

Thank you very much.
I agree. I will consider the VIN engraved in the body. Nevertheless I still have a couple of doubts.
In accordance to the 124 VIN chart attached there is a discrepancy between the chassis type and the serial number.
My VIN is 124CS10133766. The last year of the chassis CS1 was 1976 but the serial number is 133766 which indicates 1978. Also I checked the number engraved on all original glasses of the car: 7 (1977). Thoughts? Thank you

I checked a couple of other sources that listed model, year, chassis no. and beginning serial number for the 124 Spider, both of these show the 124CS1 model was produced from beginning 1974 to end of 1978 so I reckon that your car is a 1978 124CS1 model (this would tie in with your original glass codes being 1977). Here's one of the sources (the other is identical) :-

Thanks a lot!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Some info I have of other 124s with VINs near yours are:.

Model 124 Spider BS, 1608cc, VIN:124BS1*0050403, Spares:1833138, Mfg. 1972, RHD
Model 124 Spider BS, 1608cc, VIN:124BS1*0052969, Spares:? , Mfg. 1972, LHD

Model 124 Spider CS, 1756cc, VIN:124CS1*0132768, Spares:13585 , Mfg. 1977, LHD
Model 124 Spider CS, 1756cc, VIN:124CS1*0139470, Spares:1920340, Mfg. 1978, LHD

The VIN stamped into the chassis VIN is the same in two places so for me the body shell dates from 1977/1978.

Here's an aftermarket supplied firewall VIN plates for the 124 Spider from Midwest-Bayless in the U.S.,
I'm sure I saw plates for other years/models of 124 Spider somewhere but can't find a link :-

Hi,
funny thing! The stamped in VIN must be the correct one. The plate is mounted with screws, the original ones are fastened with rivets! (see attached)

The worldwide Spider Register would be a good source for the history, but these two VINs are new (will be included)!
These are the cars around yours:
chassis no.Built date
124BS1005048571
124BS1005049371/71
124BS1005049671
124BS1005050471
124BS1005051771
124BS1005059371/11
chassis no.Built date
124CS1013375078/01
124CS1013375278
124CS1013376378
124CS1013376678
124CS1013380078/01
124CS1013381278
124CS1013381578

Any more pics of your new car?
Any way: Good luck with your project!

Cheers Ralf

In my opinion it'd be interesting to see what happened, where from and how come the second VIN appeared on the car. I assume there's no other (third) VIN on the body, but perhaps there is some record on the engine - body set.

On the plate the line below the VIN should list the engine number. Is it same as stamped on the engine block? If so, that could be the cause.

Thanks a lot! Very useful information. I will check the engine block number (where is it located)? In the meantime I am sharping some pics of the spider. Another interesting piece of info is the internal plate indicating this being a spider 2000 (in the back of the car it says 1800). I know it’s a 1800cc build in 1978. Any recommendations? Thank you

Hi again,
from the pics your car must be the later 78 model with VIN 124CS10133766. Bumpers, side mirrors say: later model!

The badge on the dash board with "Pininfarina Spider 2000" could be from a parted out later Spider from 79-8x.

Heres the location of the engine no., good luck with searching!

Cheers Ralf
