Well, finally it got the better of me and I relinquished my post as Night Shift Manager last Thursday.

I had a big ding-dong with my twelve managerial colleagues and told them all to fook off and I went back to the floor as a postie the following day!

What finally did it were statements like these:

"do them"

"challenge them"

"stop being the peoples champion"

"stop thinking like a postie, start thinking like a manager"

"you really must stop treating them as humans, they are units, commodities"

"think commercially"

The sound bites never end, any way it's cost me a fourteen grand pay drop and in hind sight perhaps I should have kept my cool and lived to fight another day, but how long do you keep compromising your principles for?

On a positive note, in the six months I was in charge, morale increased by 80%, my 32 staff cleared the office five out of seven nights and they have been rewarded with "job and done", which means they've all made at least an hour on the end of their shift!

I have been phoned by my Sector Manager who will meet me in the morning, he will either persuade to to return, or sack me. I'll let you know.

Well done for standing up to the management above. I find it sad when they turn it into a 'them and us' situation and treat human beings as robots not as living breathing humans :(. It's a tough position to be in, middle management, because you are being poulled from both sides, but your staff really are your most valuable asset and only by treating them well can you get the best from them. Good luck, whatever happens :).

Well, I kinda.............................

did get what I wanted, I got to pull a Posties uniform on for two days, my Mrs loved it (she likes uniforms) and I got some terrific sex!

Helz.............................

thanks for that, but caring about people didn't progress anyones career in my industry, that's for sure, the only person you need to care about is yourself if you want to move forward.

Funnily enough, I've been told this many times too:

"be selfish, think about your career, they'll still be here processing mail and you'll be long gone"

Yes I know Steve.............................

hindsight isn't a gift I am blessed with, anyway, it felt just like the day I left school and I told all the teachers to fook off, so it was worth it!

Of course I.............................

want to keep my job!

I just want some autonomy, I want to work my way, I believe that you can think commercially and maintain a happy workforce.

The company I work for doesn't like independent thinking, they like you to be a number cruncher and work to the text book, me, I'm a free spirit and cannot be reigned in like that!
