When you remove the timing belt, doesnt the timing of the engine get screwed up? any way of keeping the cam pulley and crank pulley from turning? would be greatly appreciated...

it will knock it out of timing but before you remove the old belt use tipex to mark the pulley and the engine its self so that if it moves when you remove the belt you can just realign it easily.,
the 8valve is a non-interfereance engine so even if you get it wrong it wont break anything.,

many thanks for the illustrated guide buddy, a big help,as good if not better than my haynes manual,can now replace goosed pump that was spewing coolant out of block like a water wheel (@a half pint every 5 miles) with a new one. thought overheating was due to the dreaded head gasket ,lukily its not.cheers again

Always use a new timing belt when you take it off.
When changing time belt,change water pump, it must hold till next belt change

just took car to get mot and it failed,water leak from water pump,car overheating, this could be one of many problems.any idea how much water pump is.cheers again.

how common is it for the pump to "leak" like only dribbles?
AS there is a seaping seal from the bearings or due to a poor seal against the engine head

We have changed our water pump, BUT the timing belt will not stay central on the pulleys. So much so, that the belt nearly comes off the top pulley after a few seconds of running the engine

For trouble free operation, any timing belt or drive belt needs to be tensioned to the recommended value. Too loose and you can get problems like belt drifting to one side and vibrations at certain revs as the belt resonates. Too tight and you can damage bearings and wear the belt rapidly and also get side drift.

So, what is the right tension? Even if you can find the figure, you would need a tool to measure it. Well equipped garages will have sonic or infrared devices that measure vibration rate when a section of the belt is "twanged". Older tools rely on measuring deflection for a given applied force. A (rough) DIY approach is that it should be tight enough to allow 90 degs twist in its longest run.

To keep the belt tracking in the middle of the pulleys, there are sometimes one or more pulleys with shoulders. Alternatively, pulleys can be "crowned" where the centre is slightly higher than the edges.

As for not reusing a belt once removed, there are "schools of thought" on that. My experience (many years) suggests that if the belt is not noticeably worn or damaged, reuse is OK. They tend to be reinforced so are not going to snap without due cause. Be aware that some belts have direction arrows and should therefore be fitted the right way round.

Changed the water pump on my 8V mk2 today. Only saw this guide now, and had no manual either. Its fairly easy. It worth mentioning that you have to remove the engine mounting to do this job.

I used blue silicone that I used on the rocker gasket for this also, should be fine. Also, note that if you are planning on changing the belt also, you have to remove the lower pulley, so don't forget to mark that pulley too...

Change the tensioner too while your at it! I paid around €55 for the pump, €22 for the tensioner, think it was €18 for the belt. Sorry I'm, in Euros!

Yes, I drained it at the large pipe below the top-up-bottle.
