I bought my 2011 1.4L 8v petrol at 68,000 miles for £1.6k two years ago and have since covered 10,000 miles.

I've calculated below that the cost of the car excluding insurance and tax comes to £150/month which is about the cost it would have been to lease a low spec 2021MY Fiat 500.

Total ownership including petrol and insurance comes to £270/month or 65p per mile.

As I could probably sell the car for £2000, the monthly lease cost would actually be £67, and total cost £187 or 45p per mile.

Lessons learned: don't get attached to a car. If I hadn't put so much money into it, I could have now happily bought something else just for a change but on the other hand, I suppose I've learned a lot.

-------------------------------------

Breakdown:

Immediately I had to pay for the following:

  • Two winding-window regulators: £35
  • Radio Antennae: £15
  • Boot badge: £10
  • Broken indicator light housing: £15
  • New key fob £3
I also spent countless hours fixing the following which was just a lot of headache:

  • Lights wouldn't turn off (re-soldered stalk wire)
  • Indicator bulb that randomly stopped working (connection had corroded and couldn't find a replacement housing)
Couple of months later:

  • Two new tyres fitted: £150
  • New stop/start battery £120
Few months later when I had only driven 3000 miles:

  • Timing belt and water pump: 300 (parts and labour)
  • Service: £40
1000 miles later:

  • Reconditioned gearbox and clutch kit: £800 (parts and labour)
  • Boot latch: £15
Things still needing attention:

  • Randomly sticky first gear (even with engine off)
  • Very lean fuel burn (-25% LTFT at idle, -15% when driving)
  • Knocking noise from rear when reversing
  • Brake pads and discs may need replacing soon
  • Some cosmetics (yellow lights, peeling leather)

-------------------------------------

Total price + immediate costs: about £2000 and many hours of head scratching

Repairs/Maintenance over 10,000 miles or two years: £1200

Road Tax: £310

Petrol: £1500 (estimate at 30mpg, £1.25/l)

Insurance: £1500

Hi

My 2013 twinair has lost
@£1000 each year in depreciation
Cost @£100 to change the oil type servicing each year

4 Continental tyres and 1 DRL bulb
Also one key CR2032 And some wiperblades ;)

Tax is ZERO and it has a camchain :)

Been a good car.. but wouldnt advise anyone to do the same.. servicing has proven problematic.. so have started to do my own now

My dad has a 2015 Punto 1.2 Easy which he bought new & apart from routine maintenance hasn't cost him anything, the only thing that has gone wrong is the stereo as sometimes when a button is pressed or adjusting the volume is doesn't respond straight away but seems to be better since fitting a new Varta battery. I think his insurance is just over £200 a year fully comp whereas my Panda is £272 per year fully comp.
