Anyone know what sort of Tools and Time I'd be looking at? Or is this not feasable for myself to do?

Cheers,

Ian.

Re: Re: How easy is it to fit lowering springs?

well i had a quote for £150 springs supplied and fitted. the springs were £100 so ur looking at about £50 from a garage.
alternativly to do it yourself you will need a spring compressor which are cheap enough from hellfords and a haynes manual.

Richard, that's the whole point of this post (please don't take offence). I am trying to find out how easy it is to fit springs as Mr. cheapskate here is not gonna give away 50 squids for no reason. I managed to, flat and fit my own front abarth bumper (cost me £60 to have it primed and sprayed in my colour)
My front bumper cost me an all in price of about £220 inclusive of working fogs :)

i know.
you need a spring compressor and some spanners.
get those and its more time consuming than hard

i dont think the job is difficult or tools expensive, the main thing that puts people off doing it is working with the springs. you have to compress them so theres a hell of a lot of energy waiting to get you!

hello all, i had mine lowered at holburns. the springs were £103, and holburns charge £20 an hour to fit.they guys at watton in norfolk. works wonders to get it done in an hour, but then there was 2 of them doing it. but even at a slow pace the guys said it waont take any longer than 2 hours so £40 isnt bad.

Do you guys pay a garage to pump your tyres up too?

Lol

You would think the way you maon about half a days labour - lol

neway - easy job - did mine in 4 hrs and that was alone.

The only forseeable problem is the nuts on top of the front shocks - they are near impossible to get undone sometimes when rusted. But i cut mine off as i was fitting koni's. Check these and if these are loose enough then do it your self. Buy some spring compressors from halfords for £20. Or even rent some from somewhere - the whole shock will come off after releasing three nuts under the black caps under the bonnet!

You then put the compressor on to relaeas the tension on the shock - otherwise you would undo the top nut and half the shock would fly off. once this is done (with a spanner its just a simple thread with a hook on each end that goes over the spring) all you have to do is compress the new spring - pop on the top nut - release the spring and re-fit with the top three nuts.

Back ones are even easier - release the bottom of the rear shock and pull down the swinging arm - compress the spring and take it out - compress the new 1 and put it back - may not even have to release the shock!

Hope this helps - Kev

Re: Do you guys pay a garage to pump your tyres up too?

Pretty much as above really...

I lowered my old escort myself (no jokes,i had to start somewhere), its not hard, but i had the use of air tools (which is a BIG bonus when playing with that top bolt mentioned above too)...

As long as you are fairly handy with the spanners, well as long as you know the difference between a 10mm and a 13mm then it is fairly easy....just time comsuming!!

Best bet is to borrow the spring compressers from kwik fit or somewhere simulair, not worth buying as you are using them only once! if you give a bloke on the floor enough for a couple of drinks you can normally get away with borrowing things as long as you return them SHARPISH or else they lose their job and you will lose your knee caps!!!lol....

Good Luck
