remember the kiddies activity of tapping glasses each with different levels of water in.

I need to know the physics of it and how it actually works and produces the different sounds, any links would be helpful cause im stuck with it now :(

im guessing its to do with the different volumes of water in the glass, but i need to write it posh

silly question i know, but your help will be gratefully recieved :D

How about a mobile telephone?

Or guys with flags......
it has to be simple form and something that hasnt been done or isnt mainstream

levels 1 and 2 of the OSI model, i would go on about it but cant be bothered lol, i need to concentrate and the actual medium that im gonna use and the ways that it is actually transmitted

**** assignment but i get to do a demonstration at the end, i was gonna use smoke signals but they wouldnt let me :(

Ok, 3000 words? You'd be lucky!

It's nothing posh AFAIK (not like standing waves of a guitar in which case i would probably muster a few more paragraphs):

When you tap the glass, it vibrates, producing a sound of a certain pitch (i.e. high or low). The pitch of the sound depends on how fast the glass is vibrating (quickly => high pitch, slowly => low pitch). The faster it vibrates; the higher the pitch will be. Adding water to the glass slows the vibration (it acts as a dampener, see notes about harmonic motion not included here but in my physics folder :p), lowering the pitch. As you increase the depth of the water you allow more water molecules to remove energy from the system. As energy = hf, lowering energy lowers the frequency (h is simply plancs constant, don't know it off by heart) and vice versa (energy is proportional to the frequency).

You could look at a lot of different possibilities such as using thinner glasses (where adding a small amount of water would increase the dept dramatically) or a wider cross sectioned glass to find which would have the bigger affect on the pitch.

HTH? If not let me know :)
