I wait for the revs to settle down off the auto choke before pulling off and then dont go above 3k rpm until my oil temp gauge is reading at least a quarter then its free reign all the way up to the 7k limiter 
I usually let it get to the normal temp range before going over 3k revs.
Only go over 4k revs when trying to get up to speed on the motorway when crawling along increases the changes of being hit.
