Right, Ive decided I'm going to build a sub into one side of my boot and an amp in the other, and upgrade my front speakers(and run these of the amp too)

I still want to keep my OE headunit, and looking around it seems some amps can run off a speaker level input, I take it this means my amplified signal from the headunit can run into the pre amp side of the amp? Please tell me if I haven't got this right:I

What I really need advice on is:
1. Is one sub generally enough (I want a decent system, not to upset the neighbours!)

2. 10" or 12"? (sub that is;))

3. How big does my enclosure need to be? this is most important question, hence the title!

4. Anyone seen such an install in a Stilo before?

5. Can anyone recomend some good reading (web or book) on ICE?

cheers, James

Speaker level inputs can be used on some amps, this basically means that you wire the speaker cable into the amp as opposed to the RCA pre-outs from the HU, handy if you want to keep the standard HU but isnt reccomended as a new HU will have a very big impact on the sound that is reproduced. You will also have a greater anmount of control over the sound that comes from the amp (or amps) in the boot.

1, How many subs is completely up to you. I personally run a single 12" sub and this is plenty for my needs, I do quite a lot of miles and my set-up produces enough bass for me! You will find that when you dont have a sub you really, really want enough bass to make your vision go blurry, but as soon as you have a sub you will turn it down after a week or so and create a more 'balanced' sound.

2, This is also dependant on you, what sort of music do you listen to? As a rule, Dance music = 8" or 10" (for fast hard hitting bass, with lots of mid-bass) Hip-Hop = 12" or 15" (for low deep, bowel movement bass!).

3, Enclosure size will greatly effect the sub's performance. I would get on to a bloke called EFMAX on www.talkaudio.co.uk . He's a pro sub box builder (Yes, there IS such a thing!!) and may be able to help you decide. It will all depend on what frequency you want it tuned to and what sort of music you listen to and also the space in your boot will be a big factor.

4, No, Sadly.

5, www.talkaudio.com is a great forum with people with a lot of experience in ICE. They will be able to help with pretty much any problem you have. I would suggest you register and then search the forum first for an answer before posting. peeps on there have been known to flame noobies because thay havnt searched for an answer first.

Hope this helps! :)

Ive got an intsall like this in my Cinq!!!

Managed to shoehorn in a 10" sub in somehow...

Erm, yes yure thing with the inputs is right providing the amp has high level inputs, Failing that, yu can get line level transformers- these convert speaker (high) level inputs to low (RCA\ Phono) inputs for little cash!

I will try and get some piccys up soon- but may well be a few weeks!

Cheers for the response lads, basically I want to learn and see as much as I can before I go ahead, as I'm doing it as much for the enjoyment of the project as the end result:D

I want to end up with a really smart boot basically:D

Tom, and anyone else, pics of your installs would be ace, ta.

Sando, I may have a look on Talkaudio, but I'm not to sure bout getting flamed, one of the reasons I use this forum so much is that its nice nd friendly;)

Anyone recommend any good online guides, or any books?

Dont let me put you off talk audio, it is a really good forum, just dont waste their time becaue you'll find they wont reply! Have a look at the FAQ's and tutorials on talk audio, they are second to none.

My boot and various other things can be seen on the link in my sig. I havent got abything like an install, just a box in the boot but I have a false floor with my amps underneath to keep them hidden away.
