I am considering purchasing a used Panda 4x4 (2019), and I inspected one a few days ago. I noticed a hole in the left rear wheel well (it is not present on the right side). Is something missing from there? Do you have any advice for someone buying his first Fiat Panda 4x4? Is there anything I should particularly watch out for?

On the normal Panda's it'll be on the driver's side, there is usually a round cap like this on my car

Not too sure what it's for though

I believe it should have a plastic cover over it (just to keep dirt away) , and gives access to part of the fuel tank breather system.

'Drivers side' on a right hand drive car (note original question from Budapest, so passenger side there). Same side as the fuel filler.

Take a look through this forum for a couple of things: the centre bearing of the propshaft has a rubber mounting ring that rots away. And teh metal under tray the protects the engine is prone to rusting through.

Thank you for the quick replies. So does this cap serve only a cosmetic purpose? Can extended use without the cap damage anything important?

@varesecrazy
This particular car has the 0.9 twinair 85hp engine (6-speed manual). Already has 100K+ km in it. Also, the car's YOM is 2019 - just noticed the typo in my OP (edited).

Yes, indeed. It is on the driver's side in the UK version, and on the passenger side in the EU version, my mistake. I should have specified it. Sorry for the thread necromancy, just wanted to clarify for anyone reading my post.

Update: Purchased a 100mm (*110mm outer diameter) rubber grommet typically used for wall/desk cable management for 3.95 EUR, as I could not find the original replacement part (got a 100 EUR quote for the entire wheel arch...). It covers the hole perfectly.

The link for the product is below, but you can probably get if from Ebay too:

Still holding after 500km:

What a brilliant solution to the problem.

did you seal the cable cross? Duck tape or bathroom silicon sealant?

Noting that again, a post last commented on nine months ago has ‘come back to life’ (owing to it appearing in the ‘similar — but not necessarily recent — threads…) that cross is sealed. It’s there as a guide to let you cut out quadrants if you chose to to put cables through.

I'm not sure which cables you're referring to. There were no cables running through that hole in my 0.9 TA Petrol, 312 4x4 Wild model. If needed, you can easily cut through the grommet with a blade, as it's designed for running cables through.

but only if the cap is missing?
No I reckon any car at 5 yrs old would benefit from clean out of the grit / and road dust that accumulates. The fit will keep 95% of muck off the body but doesnt stop build up over time, and at its the edges where mud accumualtes. These aret he weakest places in terms of long term rusting. I underwash but still find it builds up. The underbody rubbersized sprayed coating is good but not perfect.

oh dear, something else that needs to be done then 🙁
I wouldn’t know where to start - where do you get all your maintenance instructions/info?

Btw pretty sure the car’s never been anywhere more hazardous than Waitrose car park, and I’ve no plans to go off-roading - does that make a difference?

Years of painful expensive experience. Also I have had the arch liners out of our oldest car for maintenance and found it had quite a lot of debris behind them, Sometimes theses things cause more problems than they solve. Not a job I would rush to do, but if you have the wheels off and have time its worth doing every two or three years. It allows for inspection and preventive treatment if required which is better than mud induced rust!
