I am currently facing redundancy on the 9th April and I have been applying for jobs left right and centre and not really had a sniff.

The company I work for is cutting its branches by half (which includes mine).

I have been offered two jobs by the company and its really doing my head in what to do.

Offer 1 is by head office who want me to travel round the country for 6 months and train and assist in the remaining branches.

Offer 2. I was taken out to lunch today by a manager in an existing branch who has heard how good i am at my job he wants me to work in his branch.

I know I should feel lucky by the offer of two jobs but my problem is that offer 1 - I may hardly be home in the next 6 months and offer 2 the branch that is after me is 75 miles away. 150 mile commute every single day to manchester

The manager wants to meet me again soon I am interested in working at another branch but i am not sure how long I can deal with commuting 150 miles a day in and out of manchester.

So not sure if i should just hang on while we have the reserves money wise and keep looking and just take the job and hope for the best. I have some major thinking to do (n)

have thought about that but when i worked at warrington it was still a 4 hour commute every day. It used to be quicker in time to go from oswestry to warrington which is 60 miles away than rochdale which is 20 miles away :bang:

I was going to suggest Dave's choice also but if it's not an option, option 1 also sounds good and you would get everything expensed, see some diffierent places and meet some new people. It's really nice that the company value your work so much and really want you to stay (y)

if it were my choice id take option two but keep searching for another job in the meantime,if the commuting becomes a chore just keep reminding yourself that its not forever(y) or if you really cant stand the traveling/job then quit and live off your reserves, at least you know you tried

Sammi, I think you'd be daft not take one of them. Offer 1 sounds really tempting to me; if you're training people it will only help your CV. I would investigate it further just to see how much time you'd be away from home.

How long will the commute take you for offer 2?

Offer 1 sounds more realistic for the time being - while your going to other branches you can still look out for other jobs if/when they come up.

How much would your car fuel bill be for if you went for option 2 also ? as I found for me to travel further for jobs meant that fuel costs rose and therefore without any rise in basic wages meant it would cost me more just getting to work.

Just a heads up though as if you decline both offers would your company still offer redundancy as they have offered you positions elsewhere ?

i'm not entitled to redundancy - i am 5 days out for being eligible for it :(

I have spoken to the manager at manchester regarding fuel costs and he said that will be dealt with.

The problem with the 6 month job is that i wont have much oppertunity to job hunt as i will be working from branch to branch and wont have a company laptop or anything. The other thing that i am worried about is will things be a lot worse 6 months down the line, more companies going bump so more competition for jobs.

I havent dismissed either offer I have some major thinking to do.

i do actually like my job  And i am amazed i have two offers which is really nice to be wanted lol

Sammy,

What happens to Option 1 after 6 month, are you then back to square 1 (redundant)?

If so Option 2 would be the best bet, if Option 1 is likely to be come permanent then it's the way to go, it's a steady secure income with a big fat notch on the cv.

either option though could be a stepping stone to another job, if you use them to keep the funds coming in whilst you look.

Is the second job permanent?

With the 6 month job, would there be any openings after the 6 month period?

Ouch, that sucks :(

I would pick option 1, if your getting fuel paid for (or money towards it), you can always look for another job during the time there, and as you said, it could be worse in 6 months time.

As its the new financial year, will that make a difference for getting a job? I know at Tesco's, they are now hiring new people, and started overtime again.

second job is permanent but i wouldnt want to do it long term, just the commuting would be a nightmare, i would take it on while looking for another job.

the 6 month job, i have no idea. they could decide to keep me or bin me. But I have been told this is phase one, i think in 12 months time half the remaining branches will go. its all a little uncertain

At a guess two hours each way at least. manchester gets snarled up, i will be on the m56, m6, m62 very bad motorways for traffic.

That will obviously affect insurance and maintainence costs on your car - i assume your going to be using your car ?

if you go with the 6 month job and nothing comes of it, you would then be entitled to redundancy ?

I think I would take option 1, by the time 6 months is up the economy might have improved, you'll have made loads of contacts and you'll have more skills to put on your CV.

Did they mention a company car for all this travelling? you might get yourself a new Bravo multijet for 6 months.:D

No i wont be entitled to redundancy. The consultation ended a couple of weeks ago and I am currently serving notice. Notice period is not taken into account when redundancy package is worked out. It calculated from the end of consulation. They are not legally obliged to give me redundancy if they are sticking to the letter.

Yes i would be using my own car for the perm but i have been told i will be given a company car for option two but i would assume i would be taxed on that?
