Hi All, I’m sure this will be my fault, but here goes.

The off side handbrake cable snapped at the weekend. So i parked our Cross up where it couldn’t roll and left it until today when the cable arrived.
There was sufficient clearance for me to take out and replace the old cable without jacking the car up. All went very smoothly. I was able to set the brakes so they are fully engaged at about 5 clicks and thought I’d do a test drive to make sure all is ok. Drove off the drive and moved back and forwards on our road which is a steep is hill to check all was ok. I caught the accelerator pedal instead of the brake at one point but seemed ok then a second or two later i got the following
Hill Holder Unavailable
ELD unavailable
ESP unavailable

I managed to borrow MES and a laptop from a friend, but I’ll be honest in not sure how to use it other than very basics (i used it to scan the car before we bought it) and I’ve got error codes of:
C1101 Can network NCM
P0226 Accelorator Pedal Potentiaometer (feasibility)

I also thought i got an error for clutch pedal, but couldn’t find it after I’d done.

The vehicle starts and drives but i daren’t use it because of the EML, hill hold and ABS lights all being on.

So question is this something I’ve done in fitting the handbrake cable and upsetting a sensor or are there other cables running by the handbrake that i didnt see and could have damaged/disturbed such as ABS sensors?

It’s now too dark for me to see more and I’ve had to return the laptop/MES cables

Abs and hill start is normally the brake switch.

Maybe the pedal is a different height since doing the work ?

Maybe try slacken the handbrake slightly

Thanks again Koala, I’ll check the handbrake tension, didn’t realise that could be a thing. I’d certainly say it’s more effective now 🤣 as I set it to the correct amount of clicks for full engagement.

I did wonder if it’s a brake switch as the C1101 CAN NCM error mentioned “brake switch is off” but the brake lights seemed to be working 🤷🏼‍♂️

I thought it could be an ABS sensor, given I was faffing around in the wheel arch, but there wasn’t a code for a failed sensor that I could see?

That threw me a bit as the switch on mine is very different and in the passenger footwell, so took a few minute for the penny to drop! I’ll order one anyway as they are cheap enough and mine seems far too easy to remove, so i wonder if some one has been there before? I did try easing off the handbrake but that didnt seem to do anything.

What i did note was that this morning i was able to drive off with no errors and when i came to the first hill, the hill hold worked perfectly, however as i set off and the hill hold released all the error messages flashed up saying ABS etc not available.

Could this error cause the P0226 one as well?

Unsure if it’s connected

P0226 normally comes on with an engine check light. Most cars don’t have hill hold. I can see how it “could be connected”

I had this once and fixed it by reseating the electrical connector at least two people have had success blowing the sensor with compressed air

To confirm you would need to clear the codes then rescan the engine codes (any cheap scanner will do) after the fault appears

Has the engine check light come back on

I can’t remember if it self clears

I also can’t remember the nut size for the accelerator pedal. It was a right pain as you need a long reach socket and it’s small than 10mm which is the smallest I normally carry

I think it came back after all the abs/esp errors came up this morning. Certainly when I set off it wasn’t there. I’ve got a new brake switch and a new clutch switch coming in a few days (may as well swap then both) because of the historic fault code.

If that doesn’t sort it I’ll have a look at cleaning it with some compressed air 👍🏻🤞🏻

Yet again Koalar you are pretty much spot on :ninja: Just a gentle wiggle of the cables from the accelorator and i can loose the P0226 code. It does come back occasionally, but at least I’m in the right area now. I’ll have a proper look at the connection in a day or two, once I’ve figured out how you actually get at it behind the fuse box!!

I’ve realised that the brake sensor/switch has clearly been out before as its so loose it literally falls out. Once I’ve got that in the right place it looks like i also clear the C1101 ESP/Hill hold issue too. So glad i ordered a new one and should be here in a couple of days

How strange that they happened at the same time as the handbrake cable fix 🤷‍♂️ But at list the Ninky Nonk lives 🤣
