Hello,

I have a question and I hope you guys can help me out. First things first. So yesterday I parked my car and while slowly driving car backwards my skidplate ( not sure if the right name) hit the rock and whole skidplate was left behind. It was dark so I don't know if that rock hit any important component, like oil tank. So I still checked what's going on under the engine, but as I said it was dark and I didn't see anything clearly. So drove home (about 8km), and next day (today) I went to check car in a daylight, but I didn't see anything unusual, except now car didn't have skidplate and it was showing warning about high oil level. I checked oil level before turning engine on and yes, it was much higher than two days before when I checked. So my question is - what could be wrong with my car?

Thank you in advance

Edit: my car is Fiat Stilo 1,9 JTD 85KW, and I don't know what oil was used in this car, since last time my dad filled oil.

In that case, did I hurt the engine by driving home 8km? But I didn't see any oil leaking or anything. But maybe because it was dark and there was a slight rain

Thanks and I checked the smell of dipstick and didn't smell like diesel. But before I drove couple kilometers and now it seems oil is back to normal. Still, tomorrow I will be driving 150km distance, so I hope everything is alright. Maybe it was a water in there? Because oil was a bit watery when it was higher. But if there was a water, could it hurt the engine? When I drove engine worked fine and there were no suspicious noises, so maybe it's alright now?

water in the oil will make it like coffee with milk rather than coffee without milk. The more water the more opaque and lighter brown, ultimately creating an off-white mayonnaise-like sludge.

If your oil is still like coffee with no milk then I don't think you've had water ingress.

Alright so maybe oil itself is not good quality. I don't know which was used but car itself seems to be working fine, at least for now. Thank you all for you answers :)

It should be okay.

If you damaged the sump it would crack (it's cast) not dent. At least you would have oil dripping out, so no oil on the floor means your car is okay.

You could have water/coolant in the oil.. but this turns the oil cloudy. If your oil looks "clean" (altoght black oil is not strictly clean) then it's good.

You could just have parked on a slope which makes the oil tip one way or another. You need to check the oil with the dipstick after leaving the car on a level surface for 10-20 minutes, so any oil in the top-end can drain down to the sump.

Don't over-fill the oil. Most of the time the car uses no oil (right?) so 80% on the dipstick is plenty. Over-filling can cause damage (frothing) or pressure problems .. or ends up being pushed out of the breather, where it can contaminate the inlet sensors.

Chances are it's just the sensor being a bit sticky. When is the next oil change due?
