Hi guys

Im new to the forum, bought myself my own first car (at 23!) a sei sporting, about a month ago now, and im thoroughly enjoying it.

However........ :)

A couple of questions really

1 - My power steering, as quoted by a friend, "feels like it might be fooked". The mate in question has a ignis sport, and his steering is sooo much lighter than mine. So, the question is, how light should it be at a standstill? I can turn his lock to lock with my finger. I've never had powered steering before, but mine does seem heavy to me. The one finger thing would result in my finger being broken with mine! I know its subjective though. Can anyone give me something to check? I have a multimeter if one is required.

2 - Slightly easier, i've scoured the forums for a thread on removing the main console/dash on my sei, but cant find anything. Im wanting to run a pair of rear speaker wires to the back seats, and also use my stereo's RCA's for an amp. I want to do things properly, so any help on the removal would be really handy. I would try myself, but i dont wanna fook anything up, and with it being dark at night, and visiting the missus in leeds at the weekend, i dont get the bloody time to mess around at the moment.

Right, soz for the long post. Nice to meet you all, anyways

TIA

Dale

welcome to the forum :)

does your sei definately have power steering? might seem like a silly question but there have been people in the past convinced they had it but then realising they didnt heh :)

afraid i cant help you on the removing of the dash on the sei as i have a cinq, although im pretty sure the wires and phono's can get to the headunit without taking the dash out (very vague memory as havnt really had a proper look at a sei recently:)

hope this helps and welcome again to the forum :)

I would imagine power steering would always be heavy at a standstill, more surface area of the tyre to move, well thats my theory anyway :D

Also when you first turn the ignition on, when all the lights on the dash come on, there should be a red steering wheel that comes on and goes off after about 2 secs, its located just above the petrol warning light

If the light doesnt come on i suspect either the power steering is tempramental or the bulb has been taken out, cause normally the light would flash constantly, if there was a problem, or so i am led to believe by the owners manual

I have taken my sei apart many times  so am well aware of the dash and how its taken apart.

The pic below shows how you can run cables to the back of the car, the red indicates the parts that can come off and the blue indicate roughly where the screws are, there is also a screw out of picture, in the rear footwell, where the plastic trim goes upto the car body, if you dont understand, have a look its easy to find.

It will be the same on the opposite side aswell.

Cable to the actual headunit, i just ran under the carpet.

A powersupply will be needed for the amp, so the powercable can go through a hole that is just above the accelerator pedal, again have a look cause its quite easy to see

Thanks Guys,

right, i shall go and have myself a look-see in a second at the dash lights. I was under the impression that all sei sportings had power steering ghost, i may be wrong though. I remember reading somewhere that the pas was speed sensitive too, so was light at low/town mph, and reduced as you got faster

Gaz, i take it from your post that you dont have to remove the dash to get the wires in? if so, that is handy, i shall also have a gander at that whilst im out there.

Ill post about the pas light in a bit

Dale

oh yes, the dash doesnt need to come out

the PAS could be sensitive although i have never heard of this, mine doesnt tend to work on cold mornings for about 10 mins

i know this is a silly question, but was the engine running when you tried your power steering

Well, if you've been steering with the car stationary that may be why it's not working properly lol. You're aren't supposed to steer when the car's stationary, even though a lot of people do it. It puts a lot of stress on the steering mechanism especially with power steering. It is however a lot stiffer when stationary and it depends on the road surface etc. The steering is stiffer on some cars than others though, I've found the Sei to have very light steering though.

My steering seems to be power assisted with just the ignition on

could be TBH, i have never paid to much attention to it

another trick you can do is find an open space, drive round in a circle then switch igntion off, if the steering snaps back and breaks your arm then the power steering is working :D

ok, the force isnt enough to break your arm but it hurts, i have tried it :(

lol you made me laugh with your airhorns and powersteering "look the error light comes up *beep beep beep*.. see! and powersteering goes too" lol :p
but you had the last laugh when i broke my car :(

oh this isnt a test for your power steering, this was just my dodgy wiring

LOL at that method gaz.

When i was learning to drive my instuctor sed to tug down on the wheel with ignition turned off, then turn ignition on... should feel the difference... but tbh most of the stuff he would tell me was very questionable.

Pete has nailed it, the Ignis is likely hydraulic which can provide much more force then the electrical.

What year is the Sei in question?

Liam

Hi again guys.

Soz its taken ages for the reply, but my dsl connection has been down for the last 2 bloody days!

Anyways. Thanks to everyone for the welcomes. and on to the question at hand.

Gaz, to answer your question on tuesday night, there is no light that comes on the dash above the fuel light. The next one that comes on above it is the battery light. I guess its supposed to be in the middle. On the live feed front, its now in, and im running the RCA take-off's, the remote amp power lead, and two rear speaker cables tonight. I feel like i know her without her clothes on about as well as i know the missus without her clothes on!! There's not much at all under all the plastic, is there :)

The Ugly Duckling, yeah, i know its screws things up, but i've had the car for like a month, and tried it whilst stationary once or twice. Its also quite heavy at low speed, which i didnt expect.

Liam, my sei is a 99 T reg. she's done just over 30K.

Thanks for all the replies

Dale

ah, i suspect you havent got it im afraid, all sportings have power steering, or all to my knowledge do, so its either knackered un-intentionally or someone knew about the problem and has just taken the bulb out of the dash

Thanks for the help Gaz, looks like im gonna have to be reaching into my pocket for some wedge in the future then. I think i'll leave it till after christmas :)

Nice front pod installs, by the way :)
