Does anyone have problems with noisy start up on their HGT, it appears to be coming from the top end closest to the cam belt.
It sounds like the oil is draining back from the hydraulic valves causing the cam to slap the valves but could it be coming from the variable valve timing mechanism, anyone had problems in this area and if so what solution is available to remedy it. I have had the engine flushed in case of debris in the valve train is causing it but it didn't cure it.
Does anyone do a workshop manual for the HGT yet? [:(!]

Hi welcome to the forum:)
one guy on here can't remember his name has the hydraulic tappets, he flushes his engine with diesel then puts in new oil and filter and the noise goes away.

this noise comes from a faulty variator its a very common problem that happens to barchetta and some alfas fiat know about it and also fix it under warranty
when its fixed i recommend you change oil every 5k and also make sure its topped and never gets low
as for manual haynes released the punto mk2 one but no HGT we asked why they said not enough sold to warrant doing it !!

I've recently bought a 2001 HGT and I'm now getting this 'diesel' noise on start up for about a second, then it's ok. I bought the car from an independent Fiat specialist and it is now out of their warranty. From the replies above, am I correct in assuming that a Fiat main dealer will fix this for free, as it is a recognised fault? Was there a recall for this problem that my HGT missed?

Also what oil would you reccomend I put in my HGT? I'm not sure what it has in at the present, but I would rather change it for something of quality in case the noise is partly due to poor quality oil.

Thanks for any help,

Mon

PS Top forum!

Never buy a stupid dwarf...it's not big and it's not clever

Also, when starting the car after it has been left for a while, the revs rise and fall for about 30 seconds or so and then level out. It doesn't stall, it just revs from about 500rpm to 1500rpm. Any ideas? Could this be linked to the 'diesel' noise problem???

Thanks again for any help,

Mon :)

not for free no but they should do it at a reduced charge on the barchetta website there is an article all about it what i would do is print it off and take it to the dealer as on it it says fiat take most of the cost those just out of warranty fiat pay 90% of cost so get this
as for oil I use selinia 10/60w oil not cheap but the best for the HGT

Cheers everyone for your input :), sorry for the delay in replying, I suspected the noise was related to the "Variator" end of things but what do you reckon it will cost to repair (car is way out of warranty now) and what are the long term effects of this problem, is it a problem or does it just continue to get on your nerves and not prove to be fatal! Also is this a Fiat only job coz they sure know how to charge! [:0]

Variator Replacement

Fiat Auto UK has stated that they believe that the main problem with variators (the very early in-life failures) has been overcome and they are now receiving far fewer support requests for these units. For anyone that wishes to send in a claim for a goodwill contribution to the variator replacement, the procedure is as follows:

Fiat Auto UK will assess every case on an individual basis.

Fiat UK's offer of goodwill contribution will depend on age and mileage - they will use the same premise as for the Fiat Coupe owner's club, up to 5 years of age, under 100,000 miles, and full service history.

Owners should WRITE to Kam Uppal at Fiat Auto UK, Fiat House, 266 Bath Road , Slough, Berks, SL1 4HJ

They should enclose:

* Copy of V5 document
* Confirmation of current mileage
* Copy of service history
* Daytime contact number - for quick response!
* Details of preferred repairing Fiat (official) dealer - this does not include DTR.

If there is any occasion on which Fiat are unable to support a goodwill contribution, a decision and explanation will be given in writing, both to the club member and if required the barchetta owners club representative.

Note though that whilst Fiat have confirmed that goodwill contributions will range from 0% to 100% of variator replacement costs - they "clarified" that goodwill contribution payments normally only cover the cost of the part and not the labour. They did however admit that they had also covered labour costs in several cases e.g very early life failures.

Whilst they've hinted that a 3 owners, 60k miles, no service history type cars would be at the bottom end they're not willing to give further status versus % scenarios as they say the range of possibilities are too numerous and is why they will consider each claim individually.

Try speaking to your local Fiat dealer first - mine sorted out the goodwill payment for me. I've posted several times about this problem before on here! - have a search for 'variator' and it should bring it up. Mon - the problem you mention on start-up with the revs changing gets sorted when the variator is changed. Mine went low enough to stall it most times. Hope you get it fixed, I paid about £140 out of warranty to get the work done, Fiat paid 70% of the cost. My warranty ran out in July.

Hi Fiat gur here
