Technical help with FIAT PUNTO ACTIVE 03

hi

i have a fiat punto active 1.2, 8v. 03 reg and has done 54000 miles

When i accelerate the car doesnt pick up speed any more and struggles at even reaching 70mph where as last week i was driving it at 85mph!!!!

whats the problem? garage man said clutch sensor or engine!!!! I hope its not the engine as i only recently bought the vehicle!!

serviced in aug 2010 by previous owner (i just bought the car)
when accelertating the car the engine makes noise but very slow pick up, it struggled to even go at 60mph (or less sometimes)

it struggles from 3rd gear up
when handbrake is on and i lift the clutch the car tries to move, biting point seems fine

EDIT : went to another garage, the guy said its the clutch, as it wouldnt stall in 5th gear. Would this also explain the extra fuel consumption?

Yup, if the car won't stall in 5th gear its almost certainly the clutch.

is that also the reason as to why so much petrol was being consumed?

The engine is working harder - but the clutch is slipping meaning its been wasted

Dont drive the car at all - unless its going to garage, as the "meat" is now very very low, and You risk overheating what remain of the clutch and may cause complications later

Drive Steady - feather throttle let the car pick speed up when going downhill if you can

Just Drive it Steady and slowly
Dont try and take off Fast - take your time
If people try to overtake - let them

Dont want to ruin the Flywheel or anything else

it was the gearbox that was broke or whatever, it cost me £350!!!!!! aaargh!! I bought the car 2 weeks ago!!

now all i need is the radio code! haha!

I doubt it was the gearbox, partcularly if they have fixed it within a day.

Did they show the broken parts?

If they have had the gearbox out, I would have put a new clutch in anyway, most of the cost of a clutch job is taking the gearbox out and putting it back in again.

didnt show me, they said they fixed it and that the clutch was perfect! The oil from the gearbox was leaking on the clutch which caused it to slip

the car picks up speed perfectly now.

That more than likely buggers your clutch!! get it replaced. any oil on the clutch is BAD!

The bearings in the gearbox went on mine. which caused an oil leak onto the clutch. which in turn failed.

It took a professional 2 days to replace the bearings in the gearbox and check all the gears for damage, refill the oil and replace the gearbox with new clutch.

surly it would take longer to repair a gearbox than to swap in a new box anyways?
either way, gear box and clutch are pretty pants in puntos so defo worth considering changing the clutch as people say. does it feel heavy at all to press the pedal? get any sort of noises/crunching when changing gears?

£350 for a new box and labour doesn't add up, so some sort of repair has been done.

I'd be changing my garage pretty promptly if they have done that.

If they had taken a couple of days, replaced the input shaft bearing and seal, changed the clutch and hit you with a bill for £350, plus explained what they had done, then that would have been a reasonable price.

Repaired gearbox and new clutch could be £350, but I'd put a proper job on the gearbox at more than that.

I hope they have not simply replaced the oil seal because it wont last long.

hmmm!

everything seems fine clutch and all that is fine and makes no noise.

i gave the car in at 8.30am and they had it done by 4pm.

they said they sent the gearbox or whatever it was away to get something done to it.

hope ive not been bumped!

The mechanic could have simply replaced the seal but it sounds like he/you got a very good service from the gearbox people.

Maybe they are are not very busy in the current economic climate.
