Hi hope someone can help, have a fiat 500 sport 1.2, the revs on idle are fluctuating code says p0016 which is crankshaft sensor changed that and the camshaft sensor but is still doing it, disconnected the battery and re connected after doing the job.
Don’t know what else to try.

Hi,
P0016 can indicate that the crank shaft and camshaft are not correctly synchronised with each other(incorrectly timed)
Was the timing/cam belt been replaced prior to the problem occurring?

Hi,
No the car was being driven at the time, then stopped to turn right, then pulled away and it started kangarooing, run a diagnostic and came up with that code, so thought I’d change both in case. But still doing the same on idle, the revs fluctuate, and the dash says start stop not available as well.

It could indicate the cam belt has lost a tooth and moved or jumped. Its worth investiagting this quick before driving just in case. A new belt aint cheap, but its better than a ruined car! May be you can remove the top part of the belt cover and turn the engine by hand to check the belt condition. On some engines the top part is removable with just a single 10mm bolt.

Asap -

Get the cam/timing belt checked/replaced retimed using the correct locking tools (not by just marking the current position of the belt sprockets as likely they are incorrect)
If it is variable valve timing engine then the locking tools are essential in your case. The cam sprocket does not have any timing marks on it as it is not keyed to the cam shaft.
Recently someone has had a crank sprocket bolt come loose- check yours , if loose then check the crank sprocket key they are weak.

Another thought is that the variable valve timing solenoid oil valve could be faulty .

Just had mechanic look at it and had said the timing belt looks like it’s jumped and the timing is out which is what you’ve said thanks for the advice booked in for Tuesday

Please tell the mechanic that if it is variable valve timing engine the camshaft sprocket has no timing marks on it . The camshaft is timed using a special tool fitted to the opposite end to the sprocket.
