Hi everyone, we have a 2002 Motorhome on a Ducato 2.8 JTD which I am aiming to look after myself as much as I can. Its only done 29K so hardly run in but she's become a bit of a smokey old bird of late so I am hoping to tackle that before we head out this season. Any advice would be very welcome :)

Generally a very strong engine in my opinion, having run several in Iveco Daily's albeit in rear wheel drive format.
Re the smoke, as in announcing a new pope, the colour of the smoke is important as a clue and whether it is constant or only on start up, or just when pulling hard up hills etc.

Hi bugsymike thanks for the reply, it’s black smoke which is on startup and gets worse under load. I have taken off the two intercooler pipes and there are no cracks etc they seem in good shape. Just looking to where the pipe connects into the engine there is a sensor - would that be the map sensor ? Wondering if that would be faulty .

I think you will find the first photo is of the cold start device that uses a return from the injectors to a heating element in the manifold, so probably not relevant.
When all intercooler pipes connected you may hear a whistling noise from a leaking turbo.intercooler pipes etc. when underload up a hill or similar when pulling hard.
Recently I tested the intercooler on one of my vehicles using a set of blanks and a small pump and was able to locate one of the jubilee clips that wasn't doing it's job so I was able to replace it with a "mikalor" bolt type clamp as much stronger.
I assume you have no error light on or codes read, air filter clean and no blocked pipes ?

I did listen for any whistling but couldn’t hear anything obvious , the air filter did look a bit grubby so I have ordered another one , I did try running it with no filter on my drive but it still smoked quite badly when I hit the accelerator. There is a 90 degree bend pipe going to the intercooler which I haven’t removed yet but feels ok , good idea with the blanks maybe I could pressurise the system somehow and see if it holds the air . No error lights , but I have just ordered a 3 wire odb adapter to see if I can get any codes out of it .

Be interesting to see if 3 wire adaptor tells you much , I could never get any information from my Ivecos of that era.

My 3 wire adapter arrived so I hooked it up to my Autel eu702 reader . It did communicate and I managed to get a few readings , nothing much though. It did show 3 codes logged but I couldn’t get it to tell me what they were. On the live data screen it picked up the throttle and map sensor at 255 which I think would be a digital value between 0-255

I connected the positive to the battery and plugged the adapter into the wiring loom . It picked up the iso protocol and connected to the ecu but I think it was pretty dumb back in 2001
