Would anyone know if I were to wrap my silencer would it reduce the heat in the engine compartment and it if did where would the heat go? In other words the heat comes from the combustion in the engine & it has to go somewhere.
Could it and an adverse effect on the engine?
The reason for this question is i am trying to cool down my engine bay, i have wrapped the manifolds but I have seen advertised heat shield wrap which is sold as a sort of silver coloured flexible sheet.
Engine 126' 650cc with oil cooler, Webber 40dco with 123 ignition.

The gases going out of the tailpipe would be hotter if the exhaust pipework insulated.

Just recently I used a product called DEI Titanium Exhaust wrap on my exhaust pipes in effort to lower engine bay temps as I suspected they were having an impact on my engine performance (see the saga here)

As you can see in the attached photos, I didn't wrap the muffler so I can't specifically speak to that, but there was a noticeable drop is engine bay temps just wrapping the pipes. For reference I have a 650 Engine with a 123 Ignition Setup and a Dellorto DHLA40 carb.

I also mocked up a temporary heatshield that I mounted next to the coil to protect it somewhat from the head coming off the exhaust, which also led to a noticeable improvement in performance.

The biggest difference in engine bay temps for me came a few hours ago when I adjusted my valve clearances, the temperature difference was night and day!

Interesting your setup seems the same as mine the only thing is I have 123 ignition but no coil! The other one is I have an Abarth 4 litre sump with an alloy heat shield over my silencer, however I am going to raise the heat shield by 10 or 15 mm & fit a heat shield in between the silencer & the Abarth alloy one with a 5 mm gap between the two for air to pass between. Also I think it is worth fabricating an air scoop under the car blowing cold air onto the silencer.
I have not seen my flap open as yet on the thermostat, not sure if it's even in there, but I have now fitted a heater pipe as like yours the guy before me did a lot of work to the engine but didn't connect the internal heater, the main
reason was the fact he installed an oil cooler under the rear passenger seat & the pipes went past the starter motor, so I had someone make a new flexible pipe to fit between. I have only done 8 miles in the car since buying it last November, I think 4 of those are from in and out of my garage just to start it once or twice a week, I asked my wife if she wanted to go for a drive last week but she said it's too small & noisy! Bl..dy cheek!
I have re hinged my engine lid to lift upward and fitted 2x 30mm stops to keep it open with 2 x rubber bonnet hooks.
All good fun and something to pass the time. also not expensive, I had a DB 7 v12 before and every time I had anything done to it it cost an arm and a leg, i.e £2800 for a catalytic converter £4000 for a pair of fuel pumps, that's why I love the 500
 
Haha, strangely my wife always says the same thing as well! Oh well, it's faster with only one person in the car anyways lol.

The air scoop sounds interesting, good luck there. The nice thing about these cars, as you pointed out, is that they're fairly cheap to work on, and lots of fun (when they're running!), almost free even considering those Aston Martin prices (just reading those prices gave me anxiety)
 
Been considering doing the same myself. But wondered whether it was going to be effective. Comments here seem to suggest it is worth doing so I think I may go this route.

Secondary point - what engine mount is shown here? It is different to ours.

Hi SPA,

I wish I could tell you more about the engine mount as it came with the car. As far as I can tell it's the same style that was used with the Fiat 126, and was put into the help clear exhaust and mount the 650 motor that's there.

Hi Ilgrilleto - I suspect that must be the case. I was once told that you should fit a different engine mount if running a 650. They must have been referring to what you have. I haven't seen many though.
 
I actually hadn't seen it before I got my car, even on cars with 650s. But what you're saying makes more sense now too. Not sure if the spring in there is nearing end of life, or if by design, but the engine seems a bit bouncier than I'd like. Ah well, another thing on the list.
