Ok well heres wat happens to a Head Gasket when you are running 1 Bar of Boost, and you have 4 girls sitting in the car which is lowered -35mm and u hit a speed bump and damage the thermostat, which is then blown off completely, Leaking all coolant, overheating the engine and then boiling the engine oil all in a days work :D
But least i got it all fixed now!! So i'm still smiling :D

It depends on who you get the work done from really, i mean partswise it wasnt too bad for me, i got a full head gasket set for £65 and new head bolts for £10. And thats only because my uncle is a fiat dealer. But the labour is where most of the money was spent. Unless you know how to do it yourself it should be ok, but otherwise it can get quite expensive.

We recently did the head on a friends MK2 Uno for about £60 and that's including getting the head skimmed at a local engineering company!
It's a dead easy job really, provided you've got a manual, some tools & somewhere dry to work in. Garages are last resorts to me I'm afraid, I don't like throwing my money away especially when a lot of 'mechanics' I've come across are either cowboys or primates (and that's just in the main dealers!! :) )

i'd totally agree. i pretty much rebuilt my engine when i got my car. all i needed was the haynes manual.. (and tools obviously)

Does the head gasket go over time? How would I know before something really nasty happens?

We're doing the rocker cover gasket on my Uno tomorrow. It's clear that oil is leaking. Not damaging amounts, but the gasket does need replacing basically. I think that'll be really easy to do. My friend helping me thinks the head gasket will be too difficult, and he's usually confident with doing work on cars.
