I remember buying petrol at £1 per gallon. I think my wages were only £1 per hour at that time.

I really hope the day of having to drive around in a 1.4 litre for economic reasons never arises. It would be a sad time for all.

I admit I'm looking forward to going back to a 200bhp or so car again after this one.

Given the price of oil ,the FX rate, VAT rise etc there is only one way Petrol prices are heading. More and more car companies seem to be moving away from 1.6, 1.8 cars to 1.2, 1.4 and smaller size cars. But at least they can get a bit more power out of them now. Look at the new 0.9 Fiat engine, chucks out 85BHP, obviously no where near enough power for you though.

If you want a cheaper buzz than running a 200BHP car get yourself a mountain bike, head over to the yorkshire dales and chuck yourself down a mountain, there's no better fun. (y).

Last time I did that, I ended up getting air lifted to hospital. Besides have a dog so no more use for the MTB anymore.

Mind you when I come to look at chopping in Pat in March 2012, there are a fair few performance cars second hand in the 14K or so region. Thinking, FD2, Focus RS, Clio RS, Cooper S Works, various 1 & 3 series.

I can remember when petrol hit £1 a gallon !!!!!!

My first gallon of petrol cost me 34p. My grandfather couldn't believe how expensive that was & was forever going on about how when he was a lad it only cost a shilling (5p) - but apparently in those days you had to dispense it yourself, by winding a handle.

He told me that, during the war, he fitted an extra head gasket & diluted it 50:50 with paraffin to eke out the ration.:)

Hope you weren't to badly hurt, ive come of a few times now but always wear pads and helmet, so tend to just end up with bruising and a few grazes.

Love the Focus RS, ive got a 2.0 zetec and that handles really well, so imagine the RS is a great car. I love driving the 100hp but when driving the Focus you realise how poor the suspension is on the panda, i can take corners just as fast or even faster in the Focus and without the hard ride. But then its costs nearly twice as much.

I wouldn't say the accident put me off mountain biking, I guess just now times have changed. I did end up with swelling on my brain (broke my helmet in half on impact!), an overnight stay in hospital, two weeks off my head on tramadol and a suspected fractured knee cap which took 4 months of physio to get the swelling down. Think I did a good job!

I've still got a bit of time before Pat gets chopped in/sold off, but as ever no harm in weighing up what is possible. Would have loved an M3 but can't take the running costs, so think I need to limit myself to a car that was <25K new if buying second hand. Focus is a contender, though not seen many up for sale, but then again same issue with an FD2 (JDM 4 door Civic Type-R).
