Technical gearbox problem!

hi all swapped my engine at the weekend due to the head gasket going,
i'm unable to select first or second gear now,
i think i may have bent the main gear linkage that runs from the
gearstick through the underneath then to the back of the engine any ideas if this would cause a problem like that??
also what that connects too on the gearbox i removed it is threaded with a raised bit that is shaped to fit the linkage could this change position?
i have a R reg 98 1.2 60s petrol

i'm not sure whith out having a look at one but i think the rod for sideways movement tat runs forward to the bulkhead then across to the gearbox may have a spline fiting were you disconnected it so you may need to un doo it and turn it slightly then replace it on the shaft and replace the nut

it sounds like your not getting enough movement to the left to allow you forward into first
