hi all, hope you have had a good new year, my eldrly father-in-law unfortunately dident, when his fiat mamy s gear box went, outside the house, can anyone give him a few options on what to do, is it worth fixing and at what cost, are there any parts for this car it seems rather a rare obsure car cant find to much about it online, can replace a gearbox myself but cant find a replacement yet, any suggestions will be most helpful.

dose that mean that any fiat panda gearbox from the same era will fit, also i think its an a reg hachback

Mamy was a special edition in 2008, otherwise mechanically a standard Panda. I think they were all 1.2.

'gear box went' is a bit vague. The boxes are generally reliable, although some synchros can get a bit weak. Need to determine what the failure actually is.

Somewhere on here are many threads about a Punto gearbox specialist, might be Manchester area. Basically same gearbox, so they should be able to help. They had their own website, and a presence on eBay.

Edit: Here they are. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/25421479...UehZ87D7p6E9Fge1524jcuCjsmsA|tkp:BFBMhJqF9LBh
Don't just buy that one, it was just the first listing I found, but follow the links to determine the correct one.

I had a gearbox explode

Fitted a 500 one of eBay £60 on a best offer and only 3 miles away

However that’s only part of the cost

Clutch
Oil
Seals
Sealants

I also fitted a new input shaft bearing

Probably doubled so if you are doing it yourself

£120 is possible £40 less if it’s already got a new clutch

It’s rare to need a new gearbox unless it physically damaged

Has it been diagnosed as faulty or just a gut feeling

he is having checked today at some point but no definitive answer as yet, i will update you with outcome by 5pm,

It could be the clutch or the gear shift cables through to needing a complete gearbox. Driveshafts rarely lose all drive but can get very clunky.

Here’s one.

Friend with a 500c thought her gearbox had gone, said no drive and wasn’t sure if it was going into any gear, the teeth had come off driveshaft at gearbox end, no noise just no drive whatsoever…usually under a bit of load/speed you’d expect some grabbing on good driveshaft, but nothing, no grating, rumbling just the reving of the engine

I’ll qualify her driving by saying her previous car was a VW Carrado, and she drove the 500 like there was a fire on the back seat. She wanted the Abarth but Johnty’, her other half, was worried she’d lose her license…she’s close!

unfortunately the gear box has gone, the price is 12 to 15 hundred to replace they said, has any one got a tutorial on how to replace one, by any chance?

For that kind of money, buy a ‘spares repair’ car, strip the box out and sell the donar car to get your money back

i am thinking about fitting it, but i build classics i dont mess with newer cars, but it dosent look too bad on the instructions,i will have a chat with him tomorow see what he wants to do.

Panda gearboxes are fairly rare but the same box as the 1.2 panda was used in

Ford KA of the right year range
Fiat 500 from a 1.2
Ratios might be slightly out but not much

Even though the punto uses the same gearbox the ratios are different and the car will rev much higher in each gear

I can see a KA one for £90 you need a bit of luck to find one near your
