Gearbox noise

Has anyone suffered this problem?
Under deceleration and during acceleration there is a very noticable metallic "hiss" coming from the gearbox. The noise disappears when you depress the clutch. My Bravo 1.6SX is only 3 1/2 months old but the noise started a couple of weeks after I bought it (new) and so far it has spent 6 weeks in a garage in total. After a couple of failed repairs and parts delays a new gearbox was fitted - the same noise was back again after 20 miles driving and Fiat don't seem to have a clue what could be causing it.
Any ideas?

sounds like a thrust bearing!have they tried this?i have a low hum when changing down from 2 to 1 gear and after lots of chat with local mechanic he has described what you have as one of the symptoms!let me know how you get on!

just don't care anymore

It turns out (i think, cos you never know with fiat dealers) that the first garage was crap. it did originally need a new g'box but then the problem was down to sound insulation not being put in. the noise is still there to a degree but i'm past caring. the day after i picked it up i was left stranded (fortunately I was at a m'way service station) after the fuel system decided to pack up. After 2 weeks of no problems the power steering started to make alot of noise at start up (low vibration when hot). It turns out that the oil was leaking and now i need a new rack. pump and belt. All under warranty but unfortunately the time taken out of my life isn't paid for. All this on a car bought new 6 months ago (but probably built along time before that). Due to the crushing depreciation of this car, i'm in negative equity right now and fiat aren't interested in changing it/giving money back - i suppose its got to try to kill me first. Decided to make it into a joke - a sweepstake at work entitled "Whats gone wrong with Jon's car this time?!" Have to laugh otherwise.....
