gear selector cable snapped !!!

I have an active sport 8v dec 05 on a 55 plate ..
my gear selector cable has just snapped ,,
AA man couldnt fix it ...
can anyone tell me if there was a known prob or recall for this ?
i have done a search and cant find anything.
also does anyone know if one cable is available seperate does it come as a pair along with plastic housing ?
i need to get this fixed asap to get to work ...
