Technical Gear Knobs!!!!

Stupid question I know, but how do I get my gear knob off? Have a smart chrome gear knob made for Lotus which I would like to put in my cinq as mine is looking a bit sorry. Thought it would screw off, but doesn't seem to budge, so how does it come off?

alright mate... i had the same problem with my seicento, bout a month ago, its abount 30 min good plus sweat and blood and tears!!

basically if it is the same as a sei, you have to cut of the rubber outer with a stanly knife, leaving a plastic core. this plastic core is stuck to the shaft so you have to saw it off... hacksaw would be best, i couldnt find one so i used some big ol tree saw, left some scratches on the shaft thou!!!

so just saw through/middle the top of the plastic core, then down the sides of it, then just wiggle it about, i screw driver helped me to prise it off... then bingo its done...

Am I being thick here?? Surely If I saw it off I won't be able to screw another one on or fix it securely and will have trouble pushing the gear knob down to get into reverse gear.

Time for a gear knob removal sticky me thinks, I've never changed mine so can't volunteer but it seems to come up every other day here.

I bought a 'bargain' Momo gearknob from Halfrauds without looking at how my Cinq knob went together. I made it fit anyway by cutting down the original enormous plastic part as far as the collar that holds on the gaiter. The new knob then bolted straight to the metal gearstick. It's a bit more fiddly to engage reverse now, but if it gets to be too much of a pain I've thought about making up a larger collar for the top of the original plastic part. I can post some pics if you want.

On sportings you cant bolt it straight onto the metal shaft coz it has to be able to move up and down when it goes into reverse.

Thanks Cinquenocto if you have photos that would be good, cos I don't see how I can change the gear knob and still press down to get reverse. I have enough driving impediments without causing any extra ones!!!

As you can see it may be easier to make the collar bigger to make it easier to push down the outer part of the gearstick.

or you can buy the proper adaptor from OMP which is made for the Cinq.

I have it fitted to mine makes a perfect job of it, tho you are restricted to OMP and I think Sparco fit as well.

Pictures are a bit phallic, but nice editing!! Thanks for the links too. Looks like I won't be able to have my Lotus gear knob fitted then - shame cos it is quite smart, much better than the grey plastic blob that is fitted at the moment. Will have a look at the ones that can be adapted. Cinq being fixed - again - tomorrow. Hopefully that will only leave the oil leak to be fixed - only!!!!!
