Hi there, let me explain what happend.

I was driving and i heard a weird type of whine from the engine when i went to put my foot down to speed up. It felt like power was loosing, and didnt sound right. There was a kind of ticking noise coming from the bonnet or front left wheel and also a smell of burning. I pulled up to see what it was.

I tried to put it into reverse and it woudnt go. After a few attempts it did, i reversed back and heard a massive BANG. Gear box oil coming fromn the car everywhere. I then coudnt even put it into 1st, 2nd ect.

AA came out, toed it back to my house, and said the gearbox has gone. I was just wondering best bets of where to get a gearbox from and is it an expensive job to fix.

Also when i let the handbrake off on a slight hill, normally the car would roll forward, it rolled abit and then made another bang and the car stoped, its like something was wedged under the wheels. Please if anyone has any anwsers could you post.

Thanks Guys!

It all sounds gearbox related, something has gone catastrophically wrong somewhere and the debris has dropped down into the diff, causing the behavoir observed when letting the handbrake off. Hopefully the driveshafts are not damaged.

A decent reconditioned gearbox will set you back £350-400. Not worth getting a secondhand non-refurbished gearbox in my opinion since it is a lot of effort to install, and the second gearbox could only have a few miles left in it. With a reconditioned box, you have to return your damaged box to them.

It is almost as much effort to change the clutch as the gearbox. If you haven't recently had a new clutch, get a £60 full clutch kit and replace it anyway.

The work is possible to do yourself, but you need a good set of tools and experience. Will cost about £150-200 to have it fitted professionally, including the gearbox oil.

what model punto do you have?

ballpark, scrap yard gearbox is around £100 (recon £250), you'll want a new clutch at around £50, and it'll take... erm, 3 hours at a garage to do.

I have a 2001 MK2 1.2 8v Punto go. Ahh just my luck.

These things happen though. Is it due to the way i was driving, or do you think its just one of those things that cant be helped?

As an expert in wrecking gearboxes (two since owning the car), I have worked out what it was that I was doing wrong. I was letting the engine revs climb too high before bringing the clutch up to launch the car forward. Fair enough, using the energy stored in the flywheel catapulted the car forward that bit quicker, but the lateral exersion on the input shaft bearing took its toll.

I now focus on driving the car as smoothly as possible, my passengers barely notice the gear change. Fast but smooth driving is definitely the way forward.

i got one for my mk2 wiv 28k on it, only £120, well worth it in my eyes.

also been told the manifold may have gone, and maybe the bang i heard and the car not moving forward on a hill has something to do with the brakes. This is going to be a expensive job!

If the diff has broken and jammed the car wont roll anywhere as its wheels are locked by the diff (whether car in gear or not). Whos told you about the manifold and brakes? i would be wary your very very unlucky if you have all 3 things go wrong in one day.

sorry, i mean the diff. So it is the gearbox, and differential at this stage. God knows what else has happend. Fingers crossed its just those two things. Is the diff expensive to replace?
