I get a sort of low pitched rumble/rattle on poor surfaces, coming from the front end. Apart from worn drop links could anything else cause this noise?

Could also be the bushes for the suspension wishbones are worn.
Have the same problem for 3 years.
Change the drop links, bushes, nothing worked.

Had similar on an Skoda years ago, turned out to be an oil less shock absorber.
Might be the wishbone's outer ball joint. The balljoint appeared to be worn/loose like a tootbrush in a glass.

All of the above, but also check that your anti roll bar bushes are not cracked and need replacing, most people forget about these.
Turned out to be a worn drop link on the driver's side.
