hi guys need some help i have 01 plate mk2 the problem is i brought it from a mate and the eml light was on and he said its the manorfold he put on the one with only 1 sensor but i need the one with 2 so i have been told can anyone give me some advice ?? as the mot is due soon...

one of 2 options

- Buy a 2 lamba manifold

OR

- Modify the single lamba to accept another lamba - Weld a cylindrical sleeve onto it - so you can add a thread for the lamba sensor to bolt onto

Ziggy

if he welded a cylindrical sleeve on to the pipe then this would work as a tom thumb so useless:)(google it if unsure what i am on about)
to OP
you can buy the threaded bit that welds into the pipe from a trade exhaust supplier, or try your decent proper factors that supply exhausts:)

An alternative which may save your behind is to wrap the second lambda in silver foil and tie it out of the way. This is a bodge which usually works.

I prefer the weld on a lambda boss method, myself. For chrissakes, take the manifold off the car before presenting it and the boss to the welder!

ok if i wrap it in foil how do i get the eml light to go out ? because next year if your eml os on at mot station its a fail....

Get the manifold sorted before then :)

The lamba sensor is there to helps get your engine warm (as its ignored) and then run as efficient as possible by monitoring whats coming out

Making it run blind can cause a little heavy fuel usage, you wont know if the cat paks up till MOT man fails it etc etc

Also S+B when i said the sleeve like thing - thats what i mean the little bit that sticks out so he can screw his lamba sensor in

i think is gona be better to just go and buy on not very good with cars but could you please tell me the name of the part i need to replace so i could ring round pls...

many thanks for your help..

Your after a Mani-cat

Because its a Manifold and a catalystic converter in one

be-aware they are not cheap....
The contain rare/precious metals/elements in them
For example

Where as getting a new boss welded on i do think would be cheaper

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lambda-We...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ec2fe1a5e

Then find a local welder or buisness and get them to weld it on for you :)
OR
find a local welding college - and see if they'll weld it up for you
Often A hella lot cheaper too!

The wrapping of the second, post cat. lambda in silver foil puts the eml out. Simples. The explanation is that the second lambda, while identical to the first, only "really" tests that the first lambda and the cat are working. If it's warm enough and not seeing any exhaust gas (hence the silver foil) it should put the light out.

You'd be barking mad to buy a new manicat. Either get one from a scrappy or get a lambda boss welded onto the (otherwise perfectly good) one you have. You can get the bosses through the post, from exhaust specialists, on eBay, etc. About 10 - 15 minutes to drill and Tig, 5 minutes to Mig, so from a fiver to fifteen quid to weld.

Hell if i had a mashed up thread lamba hole - i'd just stick a bolt in - weld that up and stick a new lamba hole in too

£100 for a new cat setup

OR
£4 for a boss + £20 to £50 quid welding = £54

makes good sense to me

the Manifold removal is such basic DIY as well - can be done with just the emergency jack too!! get all the bolts out - lower car - raise car - remove cat
Get welded up - cleaned up - painted - Refit in reverse

I'd just repap it or helicoil it, but, yeah. Except you're paying way too much for your welding.

Second lambda afaik should measure reduced oxygen relative to the first, so that ecu thinks oxidation of NO is taking place. I'm surprised wrapping in foil works! Have you ever tried it?

No, but it's an old GSR trick, used by Peter when the Puntos went from Euro 2 1/2 to Euro 3.

Of course, if it's outside, then it should measure increased O2 relative to the one in the pipe.
