I have fiat roofbars fitted already, but would like to remove them. Fiat seem to have no info on roofbars for 53 reg models. Is a special tool required?

On the insides of the ends of the roof bars theres a small hole. Through that you can access a 5mm allen key bolt. Undo the bolt then give the bolt a sharp bash from the inside to push the plastic cover out from the leg of the roof bar. Once the cover is removed you'll see a 10mm nut. All you're supposed to do is slacken it off by a few threads then the bolt should be free to rotate. If you rotate it counter clockwise 90 degs then the T shaped head of the bolt will pass easily through the slot on the car roof. You can then lift up the bar and the small cast aluminum bracket underneath. The car should have come with some little black inserts to fill the hole left by the roof bars

HOWEVER, what actually happens is that after 15 years galvanic corrosion as set in and the bolt and aluminum bracket have become inseparable. The specialist tool required here is a lump hammer. Good luck! My advice is consider if you ever want to use the roof rack again before you remove it.

For what it's worth, I Tend to remove mine once a year and clean and grease with Lithium grease, then replace. This at least ensures that when I do need to remove them, it's no great sweat. Usually takes me around 30 mins to remove, clean, grease and refit both bars, and therefore I can then just them remove in about 10 mins anytime I need to.
(I actually keep an allen key and spanner for them in the boot, just in case I ever need to remove them in an emergency)

As far as I am concerned, it's 30 mins well spent to keep things working freely.
