Just curious as to how are fiat GP's engines rated for ? Are they good build quality or they will only run to say 70k n will need replacing regardless of the care taken to maintain it etc ?

Sorry abt the question but this is the first fiat I ever owned and somebody asked this question at wrk and that made me think.

Cheers

Current Grande engines are fine in general, but it really depends on how they are looked after from new. Its an odd question, as the same rule applies to all engines from all makers, but I sold my Grande on at 72,000 miles with the engine in perfect order. Fiat make good engines, the problem is the cars are cheap to buy but no cheaper to maintain than "premier" makes, especially with regard to Dealer servicing. So they tend to get neglected in a lot of cases... with little or no basic weekly checks / top up's, add that to either poor or no periodic maintenance & it's quite easy to pick up a dog... as it is with any make TBH!

I think fiat engines are pretty good nowadays, especially for the price they cost to buy. Not many small jap cars can last as long, even the Impreza engines need replacing/rebuilding around 80k

Most engines have a rough life of 140,000 i believe before the car is replaced anyway, a very small percent of cars actually are scrapped because the car was broken - more likely it was replaced and not worth anything to sell on. Which in a 'green' society is just funny

As said, look after it and you should be fine. In return just give it a good thrashing (y)

Fiat may have build issues etc ,but their engines are some of the best out there ,GM/SAAB used the diesels and FORD are after the Multi Air ...Fiat also where first with common rail and sold it to Bosch ..So as previously said ,proper care maintainance, and it will last forever

Thanks chaps for the replies. Agreed with good maintanance they should run for a good time.

Why did fiat went for a 8v engines ? Normally its 16v engines isn't it now a days. Its just on mways journeys the rev counter goes like 4k...:) anyway thanks again

Most fiats rev high on motorways, puntos arent designed to be motorway cruisers

I do mway journey to wrk but its 10 mintutes each way (8 miles) will that be a damaging thing to do to the car ? Surely they must have tested these car for mway usage. Mind u with london traffic I hardly get to 70...

It wont harm it. Its good for a car to work hard imo.

Whether an engine is 8valve or 16 valve has no direct effect on the rpm at motorway speeds. Its the gearing that is to blame. Your 8valve has low gearing to provide acceptable acceleration at lower speeds, it is optimised for town driving at the expense of motorway refinement.

Don't worry about the engine, it could handle 4k rpm all day long. I once read that vw test all their engine designs at just below the rev limiter for two weeks solid before signing them off for production. I bet fiat do a similar test.

As has been said already, fiat supply engines to loads of other brands and you wouldn't worry about a buying a vauxhall would you.

Yes mate ur right, I asked the same question to fiat dealer when I got the GP and he said its to do with gearbox. My father in law got an old beemer n that's 1.8 8v so that's to do with gearbox the rpm figure of 4k.

Just out of interest who does fiat supplies engines to ??

Thanks

See Post #6... Suzuki also use the Fiat 1.3 MJet diesel made by Fiat... stop stressing & enjoy the car! (y)

Chrysler not chevy.

Brands that I know use Fiat engines:

Vauxhall (Most diesel cars)
Saab (all diesels)
Suzuki
Alfa Romeo (Fiat group)
Lancia (Fiat group)
Chrysler
Ford (current KA)
Cadillac

Plus they sell a lot of technology to the likes of Bosch and they make the robots that make many other brands of car.

 oops realised this last night when i was reading something about Chrysler.

I have a 1.2 8v approaching 90k on an 07 plate and its so quiet at idle at times that I need to check to see if its on.

It was an ex instructors car and has had nothing but care thrown at it in the 12 months I've had it. Also, I drive it like I stole it, fiats are a happy little revvy range of cars, they will sit all day at 4.5k rpm

Also, as the 8v engines are zero interference engines, you don't need to worry about blowing them up :D
