I have a Mobilvetta motorhome on a Fiat Ducatto 2.3 heavy weight chassis, chassis build probably 2018. I am told the alternator part number is 71796484 and is rated at 150A. Can anyone corroborate this information and is it a smart alternator?

I have 2 battery banks and am upgrading to Lithium batteries and B2B chargers and just want to make sure I don’t fry the alternator. If alternator is 150A rating I guess I don’t want to draw more than 100A continuous for charging habitation batteries plus whatever the van takes. Any thoughts?

Hi Guys Surprised no one on a Fiat site can help me with the part number query for my alternator! Am I not posting correctly?

Hello,

I don't know how to reply to your second post.

Regarding alternator part number, google search of part number confirms 150amp output. It is very likely part of a "smart" charging system.

Your other questions have been answered fully in a previous thread from someone doing exactly what you are attempting. Try using the forum search function to find the thread.

Good luck

Thanks for reply Jack - I haven't been able to find any detailed technical information on the part number. I am trying to ascertain if it is wired as part of a "smart" charging system or not and if it is ECU controlled. Is it possible for a "smart capable alternator" to be wired as a conventional non smart alternator? It is hard to get underneath what vehicle converters may have done. If I can't find specifications or wiring diagrams I guess I will have to measure the voltage to see if has a variable output over a cycle of conditions. Any advice welcome.

I have seen some other threads on this forum on battery charging but none that cover more than the standard basic questions. - Will search a bit more

My thought would be that you are expecting a lot from your alternator. (100A plus van battery load)
50% total of max output would give your alternator and wiring a chance to survive without overheating. Don’t forget your van battery could be drawing a substantial current for a while after starting.

Hi,

I briefly looked into b2b chargers and smart charge vehicle systems a year ago.

I strongly suggest not messing with the smart vehicle charging system which was introduced to help meet diesel emmisions standards, you could open a huge can of worms!

Look into Sterling Power Sterling DC DC charger BB1230 as an example

I believe that type of system works with smart charge systems without upsetting anything on vehicle. Plus no risk of over loading vehicle system.

Other brands are available.

Good luck

Jack

Hi Jack

Absolutely agree I don't want to mess with what is there! Just trying to find out what actually is there.

I have Renogy a 50A B2B for new lithium battery bank and existing battery AGM bank is off a split charger arrangement so want to swop that out for a B2B. I will have 3 battery chemistries that I want to keep separate. I suspect the existing van lead acid battery is being trashed by the AGM charging cycles but that is how it was supplied by the expert dealer!

If I have a 50A B2B and a 30A B2B plus the vehicle charging and ancillaries I am hoping it will be OK with allegde 150A alternator. I need to check wiring from alternator to vehicle as I guess it will not be rated for a continuous load as a standard Ducato chassis.

Ian - Good advice thanks for your thoughts.

Very sensible to change split charge to b2b.
Your acid glass mat batteries may have suffered from low state of charge with current system but could be fine. Charge them fully using correct mains charger in mean time.
I would be surprised if original wiring not capable of handling the max output of the alternator fitted but sensible to do visual check.

Also calculate how max power you are going to use in habitation and let us know
