last night i was happy driving down a hill when my engine cut out i tried re starting it again but heard the starter running really fast as i had a cam belt snap before on an old car ,,i stopped and investigated took of the cam cover and saw the cam belt has not snapped but the auxcillery belt in front has snapped its a double sided belt with teeth both sides does this mean my engine is knackered or can i simply replace the belt and happily drive on i noticed that the cam belt is very loose but i belive the tentioner is on the belt in front does any one know how easy it is to do and do they have any pictures i really need help thanks p.s this is a great site keep up the good work

do you think that my engine is knackered or is it ok it doesnt start the crank at the bottom is just spinning when i turn the key and thats it i havnt tried to bump it

If it is your Aux belt that definately has gone, when the Aux went on 20vt we lost the power steering not everything. If you have nothing then there might be another problem too.

I would give motormech or powerfiat for advice. If possible i would get your car to either of those. They are both coupe specialist and wont rip you off. My OH coupe and my coupe always went to motormech, he is very good.

i am going to attempt to do it myself on sun i will keep you posted on how it goes and will submit some pictures which may help others with the same problem in the future it looks pretty easy

right i have stripped the car a little further and found that the teeth have stripped off my cambelt too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dam it appears that possibly 4 valves might be bent but not completely sure as i havent taken the head off yet all the valves are moving ok but unsure if there is any damage yet any idears anyone or any simular experiances many thanks xx

i wouold seriously take it in to a specialist to get it sorted. It makes me cringe when people try and sort these cars out for themselves and could potentially do it more damage

It makes me laugh when people say this. Why does a coupe engine with a busted head need a specialist?. A new head (breakers are good for these although hard to get hold off :(), valves to replace the bent ones, Headgasket set and belt and tensioner kit will get the engine going again. This can be done by any amateur mechanic with a good tool set.

There seems to be a few problems with it. Specialists are expensive. Personally i would take it to someone who knows what they are doing, if the cambelt needs changing, aux belts tensioners... bla bla bla. Or at the very least ring for advice.

Didn't you know? All coupe engines are made in the enchanted forrest with pixie dust ;)

I find my coupe straight forward to work on. I dont see how any competant garage with a bit of research couldn't do any mechanical work on a Coupe.
If you dont know of a decent garage then yes a specialist is the way forward.

In fairness before I got my coupe the owner had serviced the car at specialists. however one job, new sump plug threaded nut to be put on the sump. Which was done at a back street garage proved too much. In removing/replacing the sump they forgot to properly retighten the dipstick holder, thus creating an oil leak. Plus forgot to top up the gear oil as a driveshaft was removed. Luckily I rectified both.

To conclude a coupe is relatively straightforward to work on but there are some poor mechanics out there.

Most garages don't do any research though.

The 16v has twin counter roating balance shafts which need to be correctly aligned or they will cause more vibration. Many garages just throw a belt on thinking it will sort itself out.

Basically got the same problem as my Tipo. Worth giving it to a specialist so they have to deal with the manifold studs if they snap off! :)

right i am back a bit more wiser and found that all 16v were bent but i am very lucky as the pistons are ok thank god managed to pick up 16 valves at 9 quid each and can i just say i have worked on bmw and vauxhall and i must say this fiat is the best i have ever worked on loads of room and very easy to set up too i will submit some photos of my time doing it in the vernear future bmw was the worst by the way lol

Yeah BMW suck. Watched a BMW 3 Series 2.5 6pot get a headgasket change and needed new headbolts and holes tapped as the head warped that much it stripped the threads from the block!.

You must really listen to ChrisUK. He knows EVERYTHING about cars - especially Fiats. He has over 40 years of experience (gathered from the Internet!). Ignore his advice at your peril;).

No I dont... I know your being sarcastic but why?. Only 21 but had a keen interest in cars since being a little kid because of my dad. Did a full engine rebuild / upgrade on a ford capri mk3.

Chris: I apologise. I know you mean well & try to help.

Over MANY years I have rebuilt many cars from the chassis up - Lotus Europa, TVR 1600M/2500M/3000M - to cup winning standards (I've got a TVR Car Club cup from July 1985 where my 2500M came 2nd in the club concours).

In the '70's things were different. Engines were simple with just a distributor to adjust using a timing light. Dual Weber or Stromberg carbuerretors were set up using a "Car-Tune" balancer (which I still have).

My best mate used to have a Mk2 Cortina estate which we fitted with a 1600cc Lotus Twin Cam with dual DHLA 45 Del'Orto's & Lotus 15" (Yes - Fifteen inch wide) F1 racing alloy wheels with F1 Wet weather tyres. The exhaust was a 3" dual system with American "Cherry Bomb" fibreglass reonators. We regularly put a con-rod through the engine block on a Friday night trying to hit 130 on the "Acle Straight" between Norwich & Gt Yarmouth. We kept loads of spare Lotus cylinder heads, valves etc. & we would spend Saturday night winching the engine out then working through the night to have a rebuilt engine running on the Sunday so he could go to work.

Another good pal was fortunate to have a dad with loads of money so he bought one of the legendary UK Hot Rods of the '70's. It was a 1954 "Sit up & Beg" Ford Popular with a Daimler V8 known as "Pinball Wizard" - an absolute legend in rodding circles. You sat in the back seats with an extended "Tilt" steering wheel & had to adopt the "1000yd Stare" to peer through the tiny windscreen.

I had very little money then so I had to make do with a Ford Escort Mexico for 5 years. Since then I have been very lucky to have bought whatever I fancy. However, god help anybody trying to set up or maintain a modern engine from scratch. The dealers can't do it very well so there is no hope for us - even with a laptop connected to the car.....

Anyway, I see in you where I was 30 years ago. A passion for sports cars but no money. It will get better. Apply to the RAF for Pilot selection - at 21 you can't leave it much later. It costs you nothing but 16 years later you can tell the world to get stuffed at the age of 38 whilst you draw your pension for life.....

Mk3 Capri - a very easy car to work on - as long as you have the correct "star" socket to undo the cylinder head bolts (I do). OHC belts easy to align. You won't do it on a modern car:eek:
