Technical fiat 500 1.2 2008 selespeed unit

hello.

My wifes 1.2 semi auto 500 "bumble" has developed a problems with the gearing, the transmission light comes on and off depending on how shes driving the car.
this has been checked over by our mechanic ( we live in Orkney ) he says we need a new or recon selespeed unit.....

Can anybody/help/advice please

I think we need a fair bit more detail on the symptoms. The "light comes on and off" and "depending on how she's driving the car" need tightening up a bit.
Does it stop changing gear when the light goes on?
Problem in Auto or Manual mode or both?
Does it leak?
It could be as simple as a corroded connector on the drivers side rear light cluster, or a faulty brake light switch....
