Hello everyone, new to the forum, but it looks like a good place to ask about all things fiat spider related.
I picked up a 1980 spider a while ago and am now looking at getting it fully sorted mechanical wise. There are a couple of problems, firstly the starter motor can be a real bugger at times, sometimes engaging, other times just spinning without engaging the flywheel. Is this something that others have had problems with? And is it just a case of removing the starter and giving it a good clean?
Second off, its running a 28/32 adha carb, which is standard for the car, standard 1995cc lump \ head and inlet manifold. It has problems starting from hot, and i have noticed that all of the vacuum hoses have been blocked off, on the carb and mating plate to the manifold. Are these needed or were they just there for the US smog control.
Thirdly, a wierd one for you, the rear brakes have got a mind of their own and have a habit of binding on. Doesn't matter if it has been driven or not. A friend recently drove the car down to me ( @ 750 miles from London to Bergerac in France) and it happened 4-5 times on the way down. Leave the car to cool off for 45 mins and they seem to free themselves. Also I left the car idling outside for 40 mins the other day, the brakes were fine when I took the car out of the garage but by the time I went to put it back in, the rear brakes had bound on. The only thing I can think of is that the rear brake pipe has come into close proximity to the exhaust and is being heated up to the point where it expands and applies the rear brakes. Anyone ever come across anything similar?

Thanks

Steve

Sounds like the starter bendix spring is weak.

All the hose junk was to meet US Emissions requirements, a very common swap as well as upgrade is to get rid of the 79/80 carberator and intake manifold setup and install one from a earlier 1800, some even go so far as to change the head also for a slight compression increase. The carb and intake swap really add to the cars performance as well as gets rid of all the hoses.

If the brake fluid was heating up in the lines you would have no back brakes at all as the hydraulic compression function would be lost. Make sure your park brake is fully released and that your park brake cables are releasing all the way. You might also have to check the rod adjustment from the brake pedal to the brake master cylinder.

Cheers for the reply, I was thinking about the 1800 head as I've read good things about that swap, looks like i will be getting the starter out for an overhaul as well, any tips on that as it seems a pretty tight fit down there.

As for the brakes, they are still confusing me, as the problem only happens after everything in the car has warmed up, say after 40 mins or so. The mate who brought it down said that it happened a couple of times when he was driving on the autoroute and hadn't touched the brakes for some time. They just started binding all by themselves.

Cheers

Steve

One more thing, there appears to be an electrical connector at the front of the head, where the top pipe for the cooling comes out, it isn't connected to anything, any ideas where this should be connected to? Even more confused as I would have thought this for the water temp/cooling fan, but both of these are working fine.
