Right lee, lets see if we can work out whats wrong with your car.

Note to others, lets try and keep this thread tidy so its easy to follow.

Right, its a 1.6 yes?
Age of car?
Mileage?
Where did you get it from?
How many other owners?
Do you know if its had any work done in the past such as new injectors?

Have you kept a log of its MPG?
What fuel do you normally use? (shell, BP etc.. as well as normal or super)

Now, can you give details of the problem starting with when it first happened. Try and give as much detail as you can remember, weather conditions, how much fuel in the tank etc..

And details of exactly what you have done to try and fix it.

Modle : fiat brava 1.6 sx
born : september 2001
owned since : september 2002
mileage : 32000
Bought from : Stebbing in Kings Lynn
Payed : £6000 @ time it had 12000 on clock
petrol : Std petrol usually from swaffham safeway
problem 1 : Ratterly noise
Conditions : if i roll at 3500rpm in 3rd,4th or 5th
i get the noise, and if i accelerate i
get the noise aswell,
since : started ever since i had the car
had done : took it to stebbing and fiatm both dont know wats wrong, i think gearbox or clutch, if i roll at 3500rpm in 3rd,4th or 5th i get the noise, and if i accelerate i get the noise aswell,
problem 2 : engine problems
conditions : travelling along say in second at
3500rpm, stuck my foot down to over
take and the engine stopped to think be
for going, it was holding back to the
point u could feel it slow down.
since : ages cant remember when it started
had done : ECU reset, took it to fiat they did the
diag test and ecu reset and still the
same. they dont know whats wrong
note : runs better with a full tank, which
makes me think crap in the fuel tank is
blocking injectors n fuel filter

Kind regards Lee

p.s sorry for the hassle i cause. :s

Re: Re: FAO Lee

opps i forgot it changes the length of it i was trying to make it fit the little white box i wrote it in hehe never mind

Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

When you say it runs better with a full tank, have you tried it after simplyputting more fuel i rather than a full tank. I only ask as this was an old Ford issue with the filler caps not breathing enough and a vacuum occuring in the tank. hen you then put ore fuel in the tank becomes depressurised and the car runs OK again. Have you a different fuel cap for instance or any other modifications.

Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

nope no mods yet, will do when it sorted im hoping to find the problem and tell fiat to fix it for me under warrenty and then modderfy engine,

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

What does the rattle sound like? quiet, loud, like metal on metal?

It could be:
*Clutch release bearing (hard to proove without taking the gearbox out)
*shot tripode joint (driveshafts off)
*fault in the gearbox (have you tried new box oil?)
*CV joints

As you say it happens around the 3500 mark, thats when the 1.6 changes tune so it could be an exhaust/induction problem. My first check would be to look down the back of the engine and check the 2 tinplate heat shields are fixed correctly. They do come loose.

Next would be to change the box oil, check for bits of metal in the old oil (clean the drain pan really well before) and then refil with Castrol Syntrax oil.

As for the engine... You have not done an ECU reset yourself? I would recomend disconnecting the battery overnight just to see if that helps.

As yours is a later 1.6 most of the sensors are integrated and fooking expensive to replace.

I don't THINK its a fuel issue at this stage. I would replace the air filter, replace the fuel filter, give it a set of bosch super 4 plugs and reset the ECU by leaving the battery off overnight.

I assume it starts and idles ok? No lumpyless? blocked injectors usually show up most at idle.

Does it warm up ok? Does the needle sit about halfway when you are driving or does it move up and down alot?

When the car has been for a long run, check to see if the exhaust smells very petrol-y.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

ratterly noise is metal

i have done an ecu reset and nothing happened, fiat did an ecu reset and nothing happened, MARK the pro mechanic and fiat drove it heard the noise and changed gear box oil, nothing happened,

on start up its a bit of a slag, usually first time but it spins before bitting, (if u know what i mean).

idle well i am confused with this one, k cold it sits at 1300 rpm gradually falling to 750 rpm as engine warms up. but if i rev it round to any revs above 2000+ rpm it will drop as usually get to about 1300 rpm stop for a few second and drop to 700-750 rpm, is that normal.

Heat sensor sits at half way all the time except for when just started once warmed up it dont really move so i guess that ok.

did notice this yesterday aswell coming from my clutch, i got coming home after driving a bit hard and sat on my drive for a little bit, to check my texts, and there was a noise coming from my car, a wierd one at that never heard it before, the car was in neutral, so nothing should be really doing anything. my mate said hes car does a simirlur noise, it is his clutch so i stuck my foot down on the clutch and it stopped it. is that usual??

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

When you press the clutch pedal, the gears stop turning, so the noise is a worn gearbox (usually bearings). If the noise came on when you PRESSED the pedal, then its the thrust bearing, as that's when it's under load.

Pete

P.S. No amount of oil changes will cure it!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

so its my gear box then, so y did it stop when i pressed the clutch...... dont bother answer cos it disencaged the gear box.... ok how much is a new 1,

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

if i had to do some mods wat would u recomend i.e item and price

spark plugs, leads ect everything that could make a difference and hopefully i will come across the problem when maxing it up a little

Kind regards Lee

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

Check the heat shields on the back of the engine, they are the usual cause of rattles on the 1.6. If they are fine it will rule them out.

I'd try new air filter, new plugs and do another ECU reset to completely rule out those items. Fiat seem amazinly useless at changing these items.

Gearboxes will make noise when they are hot, the oil thins so you will hear the gears meshing. Its not a problem 99% of the time.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

Thanks tom, ill give it ago, where do u live??? if it aint to far i could bring the car for u too look, also if u got msn add me plz. [email protected]

Kind regards Lee

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

as i dont really want to void my warrenty till i have found the problem, i am trying to do the mods that i am responserable for, i.e the parts that wear. so changing the air filter i cant do yet, but the sparks and ht leads will that void my warrenty??? my warrenty means a lot to me, as i am 19 and spend to much money on alcohol doesnt leave alot for new gearbox and other stuff....

kind regards Lee

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO Lee

Air filter is a wear item, just change it.

Don't bother with plug leads yet, they are expensive.
