Technical Fan/Heating/Air Conditioning Failure

Hi everybody.
I recently bought a 2nd hand Mk2 Punto Sporting. It was a private sale so no warranty. My cool air and heating has totally failed on me. Nothing comes out! This gets rather annoying when the windscreen starts fogging up and I have to put down the window in the freezing cold to clear it!

I am no mechanic and was just wondering could anyone tell me a reason why this may have happened. It was working when I bought the car. Would it have anything to do with the AIr Conditioning unit or would it be electrical.

Am I better off bringing it to a garage?

Have you checked the fuses?

Yes, i checked them last night using the manual. All relevant fuses were still solid. Going to check all the wiring behind the centre console. I reckon its a relay problem
